Texas Instruments IC Sockets for a MIMEO Reproduction of APPLE 1

Hi there,

Here at our Museum we're building a wannabe-perfect(*) reproduction of the APPLE 1, thanks to Mike Willegal's boards;

we almost found every single component dated around 1976 but we can't find this kind of IC socket:

They were made by Texas Instruments but we have serious difficulties finding them!

Can someone help us?

Greetings,

Gabriele
http://museum.freaknet.org

(*) we think that a reproduction of a piece made for a Museum has to be as close as possible to the original one, has to be made using the same tools available at the time (lead, soldering irons, instruments) and need full scientific documentation for the entire process, describing any difference between original and new parts; so we collected every part with the closest datecode and estetic shape as possible, by checking every original Apple 1 picture available (thanks again to Mike for his Apple 1 registry!); so, no purple gold/ceramic ram, no ceramic 2513, etc... Smile

I might have some NOS but I don't know how many yet.
I'm away from my source for a few days but can let you know.
If I remember correctly, those TI sockets had thin brittle legs on them but could pop in and out of their carriers, so you could "replace" them from a donor socket if you had to.

I'll let you know.

Also while I am posting, I'm also looking for Augat 14-pin sockets that have closed centers but with the 2 screw holes in them.
I need enough qty to do an Apple 1. If anyone out there has any, please let me know.

What kind of socket are you talking about?

Something like this? http://www.galco.com/buy/Augat/514-AG11D

Here in Italy I can find similar precision sockets, so if you need them,. just ask!

Thank you, let me know please! Smile

Well since I had to plug my laptop into my generator to charge the Mifi, I figured I'd check AppleFritter... (I'm in NJ and we have no power, heat, spotty cellular data and no cell phone voice service)

These sockets are about the hardest thing to find...

The 24 and 40 pin are easy... The 14 pin, hard and the 16 pin impossible.

Most of us who have found them have paid an incredible amount considering they are cheap sockets. If you have a good desoldering station you can get some off old S100 cards because they seem to use them. This is how I replaced a bad socket on my Processor Tech 3P+S card. You will pay a couple of bucks per socket for the 16 pin if you can find any NOS.

If you aren't picky, you can get the TI sockets with the same profile just not completely closed frame, (they still use the mylar backing to hold in the pins) and they are much more common. When stuffed, they look the same. Then you only need to scavenge a single 16 pin and 14 pin from an old card for the keyboard and unpopulated socket.

Anyway... Back to the disaster called the Jersey Shore...
Cheers,
Corey

Hi Corey,

can you tell us where you can get the open frame TI sockets?

Hi Asbesto,

I am about to embark on the same project.

Just waiting for Mike to produce the next lot of Mimeo boards, although I have a Newton board on its way.

Did you have any luck locating the TI sockets?

What about other components?

I have managed to scrounge 3 ceramic MC6820s date code: 7710
Im going to see a mate who has a garage full of old arcade machine boards from that vintage, i am hopeful to score lots of other bits.

of course http://www.unicornelectronics.com/Apple1/apple1.html

can source most of the components at a price.

Would you be willing to share some of your sources?

Cheers, Martin...

Maybe we can trade Smile please email me Smile

About other sources to share (sorry for this late answer), well there's not so much: we spent months on Ebay (us, uk, germany, italy) and we found something from old boards from a scrapyard; other stuff come directly from my old bench lab, and other more from my brother lab Smile

we are detailing every aspect of our apple 1 reconstruction; the idea is to create a book/catalog of our work, in italian and english language; but we need a lot more time for this Smile
