Apple ll Rev 0 eBay spoof/ eBay hacked?

The eBay "second chance offer" I received was a spoof.
Ebay appears to have been hacked a bit or something...
The other top bidders received them also.
Some of us contacted eBay and they are following up.
The offer came to my private email address and not through eBay messages...the tipoff there was a problem.
Ebay apparently was hacked because the spoofer had my name, id and email address and those of other bidders.
The seller was not proficient in English but the spoofer was well educated by his responses in several emails to me...
... another sign that clearly something was not right.
Ebay will not let you speak with the Fraud Department and the dept. only sends stock responses 24 to 72 hours later.
This is too late to catch the spoofer who is waiting for your money.
Be careful out there.
DC

PS I am still looking for a Rev 0 Apple ll in excellent condition.

Wow.

This is an amazing story. I just told it to my kid as an explanation of the dangers of the Internet and how you really have to be careful and smart because people are out there looking steal from you.

So in the end the Rev 0 really did go for almost $5800 and was paid for.

As for finding a Rev 0, have you concidered one of Mike Willegal's rev-0 replicas. I think he might be doing a new run soon. Send him a message and check. If he does, I will be making converted ventless cases and having aluminum silver supply cases made up so that you can transplant the guts of another supply. It will actually be a challenge to make the supply case with silk screen and toggle switch because I want to make it use the guts of an Aztek supply which has different mount points in the PCB and the "rivets" you see on top of the supply are the mounting studs. But I have some ideas on this...

So if you go for a replica Rev-0 (a ventless real one would go for much more than 5-6k if you could find one), you will need a donor II plus for the baseplate, PowerSupply guts and case top. I'm hoping we can convince Mike to also finish his replacment datanetics keyboard layout that fits the apple II and uses a microcontroller and cherry keyswitches. I really want a ventless Rev-0 so if Mike does the re-run, I will be working on recreating all the little details. I hope to figure something out for the raised power indicator. I'm thinking maybe 3d printing after laser scanning my cap. then silkscreening the words and clear coating the whole thing. I expect I will have to print the key in two pieces the translucent part and the solid part.

As for emblems, they come up on eBay from time to time for around $100 for an Apple II one, so keep an eye out for one.

Cheers,
Corey

Dcarlton,

I have said it many times up here...

Be aware!

This is a prime example of the things that can happen on eBay, to buyers and sellers alike. Guns'nRoses said it: "Welcome to The Jungle."

As good an analogy as any. Smile

Re: Apple ll Rev 0 eBay spoof/ eBay hacked?

Hi all,

I was also contacted by this mysterious guy. But I was suspicious since the beginning for the following reasons :
1) He told me the winner was not okay to buy the Apple and send me a second chance offer. But there was many other bidders before me. So why does he contact me ?
2) He asked me to send the money to eBay via bank transfer. The money will be hold by eBay, until I acknowledge receipt of the package. The account was in London. Curious for an US sale. And I never ever see something like this on eBay before.
3) The mail from eBay use a strange domain name like ebay.xxxxx.info. The same domain was used by the mail from the guy.
4) The second chance message was pretty well imitated but contains informations that normally won't be there like the mail of the seller.
5) I'm living in France and the shipping price was ridiculously low for all the items : $100.
6) The guy never told me his name and he was not using the mail shown in the second chance offer message.
7) I contact the seller through the eBay messages : no answer.

I was thinking about sending these informations to eBay but I don't really see what they can do now.

The real question is : how this guy get all the bidders addresses and mails ?

Just in case, I have changed all my passwords now Smile

amauget,

Yes! Definitely send the information to eBay.
This person is a danger to the entire community.
I personally would like to see his butt banned from eBay forever and placed in jail for a while.
The more info eBay has on this miscreant, the better.

Just my opinion mind you. Smile

Hi,

A little update.
So I've sent a mail to eBay. I received an answer which was hard to understand since it was barely written in my language. It seems to come out of a bad automated translator.
In this message, there was a mail adress to send the spoof message. This is what I've done.
Then I received a beautiful automated answer telling me the message was not coming from eBay.
What a surprise.

And... that's all !
No further investigation trying to locate the swindler.
