Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on here...?
Check these 2 ebay auctions selling two different Apple IIs with the same serial number (!)

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

I couldn't find a picture of the actual serial label on the active auction. My guess is he just copy and pasted the title from the sold auction.

I'm going to try messaging him to see if he could take a picture of the bottom serial # label...

I'll let you know what he says.

On a side note: the label would not be hard to replicate... Just food for thought.

It seems that there are also other reasons for suspect:

Seller claims to be relisting due to missing shipment,
but is located in two different locations ( Norcross Georgia, St. Louis Missouri )???
and the lowest row of RAM chips have deffinitly been changed.... ( lowest row with or without goldtop )???
not to talk about different content of interface cards....

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

Or someone bought the first one... Took out the parts they needed for their Apple II and swapped in the stuff they didn't want and put it back for sale. Location doesn't mean anything as we don't know the location of the buyer.

This is a common practice in the Altair world to get MITS serial cards and cassette adapters. Sometimes the person who does it can make a profit. I've seen it happen where a guy buys a machine for 2k pulls out 3 cards and sells it for 2500 or 3k,both purchase and resale on eBay.

Personally if I saw a rev 1 or higher with a low serial number power supply that would match my rev-0 I'd be tempted to do the same. My rev-0 power supply while the correct model, the serial number is too high. So it would be the right thing to buy one and swap the supplies to correct both machines.

On that note anyone with a silver power supply around serial number 3000 they'd be willing to sell with or without a machine around it. I can trade my first born... He annoyed me anyway yesterday about playing minecraft past his bedtime... LOL

Cheers,
Corey

It's not someone removing a couple of parts and reselling. If you look closely you'll see the power supply is different, the case is different, the motherboard is different

I didn't look closely. I was on my iPhone.

So this does seem weird though...

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

The first one's title says 13249, but the description of the item in the body of the auction post says 12349. So maybe it's dyslexia...

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

Unfortunatly the most sellers at ebay turn out to ignore such requests and just insist to continue
the offer without correction - just hoping to find an idiot they may be able to cheat....

If the seller does not reply it often enough turns out, that the guy knew before about the problems
and just continues on the task ....

i just keep to the rule:
If the seller does not react then he must know that he is cheating
and just is not willing to turn back to reliable behaviour....

that´s nowadays "modern times"....

the real scandal is that ebay is that greedy for the fees that they don´t shut off such guys from business....
it´s an everyday problem: if ebay would seriously track down copycats and misbehaviour they would loose more
than 25% of business and fees... and they would need more people in research and trace
than in sales
and administration so it´s better to pretend being blind and dumb....
We´re back to the Who and the legend of Tommy the pinball wizard...

It´s the same like in the descriptions claiming:

"i did not have ability to test...."

that might often be better translated to:

" i know i´ve pulled away that stuff years ago due to malfunction ... hoping to be later able
to repair it.... but i haven´t been able to repair it till now... therefor i´m kicking the crap
out of my storage today..."

that would be at least in most cases more honest...

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

Sent a question to the seller, received a response in less than 10 minutes. Asked for clarification, got instant response. Just waiting for photos now to confirm.
Here is the response: "You are correct. It is A2S1-11181"

(First response had an extra hyphen so asked to clarify)

I message this guy twice and he does not answer me. You message him once and get a response back in 10 minutes lol. Typical.

Re: Are there fake A2 serial number labels?

Keep in mind as I said I am still waiting for pictures. However, the responses were immediate and the second one ended with "Let us know if you have any other questions."

I also told him he should add the info about the serial number (besides the photo) since it is a couple thousand digits below the one listed making it more valuable.
Time will tell what actually happens!
