Simple Program to write and read back memory on the 80col card

Does anyone have a write read program to check the memory on the expanded 80 column card. Im trying to isolate the artifacts on the screen in 80 column mode.

Reboot your Apple IIe while holding the solid-apple key.

This writes and re-reads the expanded memory?

Do you have access to a Regular 1K 80 Column Card??

Swap it in, and see if you get the same Display Issues...

Reboot your Apple IIe while holding the solid-apple key.

This writes and re-reads the expanded memory?

I seem to remember that the Built In test doesn't check the extra 64K.. You might try the utility that is used with the Applied Engineering RAMWORKS Cards ( I, II or III )... I seem to Recall that it will work on just 64K, even with the Apple 64K card..

Hello jrubin,

maybe the code at the following page is interesting to you:

http://www.appleii-box.de/P002_AUXMEMIIe.htm
or:
http://www.appleii-box.de/P027_Page.htm

it contains a publication from may 1985 at the Magazin Nibble.
The program in that description explains access and read / write operation to the auxiliary memory of the Apple IIe.

At the moment today i just made a page of that publication.
I surely do have also the related disk with the program itself from Nibble,
but it still is resting in one of the dungeons of my disk archives splitted in various storage locations....
( i started few weeks ago sorting, but that must be continued throughout the next months.... all disks together
sum up to a total amount of more than 4000 Floppies..... )
so maybe somebody is able to provide more early here a link to the image of the Nibble disk of the month May 1985
than i am....

otherwise happy typing or waiting till next year till i have sorted the entire mass of Floppies....
when i stumble across that disk i will make an image and add a link of the image to that page....

sincerely speedyG

No, it does. Check the Monitor source listing that Apple published.

Hello,

You can also use a diagnostic program like MECC Computer Inspector or XPS diags.

The initial Posting:

Is a big bunch of replies related to the question ????
Are we talking about testing routines or about read / write access ???

It seems upcoming behaviour that one starts leaving the purpose of the thread and others follow without
checking the topic....

in general that should not matter.... but at the other hand if newbies or members search for solution
of a topic and then re-read after months this thread they don´t find the stuff they are searching for....

...ever have been searching along former topics and the threads crowded with "non related replies" ?

Then I remembered wrong... Wink

Is this Extended Memory Test in both the Original ][e ROMs as well as the Enhanced Ones?? I remember there is an 80 Column bug with the non Enhanced ROMs..

We are Rushing to the End Game... Sometimes you give the OP information They Need, not what they Asked For.

IF the OP had asked for examples of Writing to the Extended Memory, I would "assume" they were interested in making or modifying a program to use that memory..
But since they noticed Screen Artifacts in the 80 Column Mode, and were wondering how to Read and Write to that memory, it might be a good Idea to Test the Extended Memory, since there are many ( as it appears ) available tests, to see if there is a Hardware Problem.. Then proceed with a program to write to the Extended Memory.

The Artifacts are most likely from Bad Memory or Support Chips, or a Bad Connection between the Extended Memory Card and the AUX Slot.. The OP will need to eventually fix that issue in order to enjoy this fine computer..

Back to the Original Question, I found you Article from Glen Bredon quite helpful, ( Some of the Text in the Gutter is unreadable, I ordered the 1985 Nibbles from their Web Site, hoping for less text loss ). I personally have been looking for this information for a while, I have found some basic examples, but Personally, the Merlin Assembler is my favorite, and I like Glen's writing style..
