Need some serious Help with Apple Lisa/Mac XL & H-ROMs

Hi friends :)

what do I miss here? :(

... I just burned me the last Lisa ROMS, the H-ROMs (341-0175-H & 341-0176-H) on suitable 2764 ROMs but I only get such gibberish on the screen when I plug them onto the CPU-Board.

Here's also a short video of my Mac XL/Lisa showing what I mean: https://youtube.de/watch?v=d93gUHUsrwM

There is even no startup-beep. When I put back my original ROMs (341-0346-A & 341-0347-A) everything went back to normal.

These are the ROM dumps I used:

http://www.bitsavers.org/bits/Apple/Lisa/firmware/

https://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=14062

I already did this:

- removed the special CRT converter/transformer that sits near the screen inside the cage

- cross-checked the Chips by dumping my originals, burned them onto these and different other EPROMs again - they work flawlessly :/

- I also managed to get me a suitable original VSROM 341-0229-A for the CPU-Board, but this didn't help :/

- checked for visible damages on all parts

- scratched my head till loss of hair...

Is there something I may forget to change when changing to the H's? Or are these ROM-Dumps somewhat special to burn?

My Eprommer is a Willem Universal Eprommer PCB50B (parallel port), used under Windows 98SE.

I also welcome, if someone would be so kind and just dump/image his or hers H-ROMs for me :)

Any advise is welcome :D

You have a Mac XL, so, you

You have a Mac XL, so, you also need to un-do the screen conversion kit.

It has been  very long time, but I do not recall the older ROMs being able to run after that conversion.

I'd suspect: You need a Lisa-Video State PROM, which has the serialisation code in it, and as I see a Widget in the corner there, you need IO ROM 341-0261D, if you want that to function.

Hi :D

Hi :D

well I already undid this XL conversation by removing the little transformer near the CRT and by swapping the ROMs ;)

I also have the other ROMs, including the 341-0261-D ... today I got some other H-Dumps and will test these again.

Did you install a serialised System State PROM?! You won't get Lisa Office to boot without that. You will also need Lisa Ofice disks with the serial code cleared in a hex editor. I used to do this for clients back in the 80s/90s, using tools under System 6.0.3 or something like that on a Mac SE.

I wish that I could help more, but my only remaining LISA stuff are some new Apple service parts (RAM boards and IO boards IIRC); and keyboards that I'm saving for a Lisa KB to Mac adapter. I do not have a factory ROM set, but I saved a prototype Lisa system badge. I was going to use that if I ever replaced the Lisa 1 components off our conversion system, but alas all three of the Lisas that I had were stolen, including a prototype in a platinum coloured case. :/

I'm completely disgusted at how much Lisa systems cost now, as I will never be able to relive the enjoyment that I had in using the system to write books and develop software.

Again, look at the checksums, and examine the H ROMs in a Hex Editor. You may try the G ROM instead, or a slightly earlier version, too.

Thanks :D

Thanks :D

but I forgot to mention, I just get this gibberish screen instantly when I turn on the Lisa / Mac XL ;) way before any kind of OS could load ;) ...and like I said before - the new VSROM also works flawlessly in my Lisa 2/5 .. so this isn't my issue here I guess :/ I will check these ROMs again and report back.

Oh damn... all stuff were stolen? :O I fear such day here too, because I have my Office upstairs fully packed with vintage dream machines of Apple  NeXT - this prevent me to go on too long holidays in the past ;)

OMG!!! Unbelievable - really

OMG!!! Unbelievable - really all - official & unofficial sources to these H-ROMs seem to be corrupt?!

But... there was a life-savior around :D I just got an E-Mail with a nice dump zipped inside ;)

...even my Mac Works/Macintosh OS is booting just fine from it's widget drive ;) last step will be a proper recap of the video board and the screen calibration.

Please post the images that you received so that we can all archive them. I'd like to compare them to the public images. It may be something as simple as a padding offset. IDK how often you have used the machine: To start off, if it hasn't been used for years, don't run the widget for more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Run it for minutes a day for a couple weeks; then be sure to spin that Widget up at least once a month. This wams up the lubrication and will keep it working for years. I used to service those mechanisms. They are extremely reliable IMO, but they are easy as hell to damage and must be kept active. Be extremely careful when handling its analogue boards. The resistors and caps can be very easy to break off and lose, and diagrams for them are a bit hard to find. Very nice to see the system running, congrats. You should track down a copy of the development system disks, if that sort of thing interests you.

Hi  I have a Lisa 2/10  (H/88)  thats have been working for some years. The harddrive is dead but it has been working and booting from floppy. Suddenly its not booting. The PSU is OK  and the lamp on the switch is OK. A white screen on the monitor but no click, no error beeps and nothing on the screen.  According to repair manual one should replace the ROMs.  I downloaded  bin rom  files from Macgui , 341-1075-H and 341-1076-H . Burned two Intel D2764a-2 EPROMS without any problems.  Verifying the ROM and BIN file was OK. After replacing the result is the same. No click, no sound.  Does anybody know if  the ROM files on MagGUI.com are OK or not ?

Is it time to replace the CPU MC68000?

Thanks for any help

ROMs in Lisa 2/10

Hi, a clarification about the ROMs in Lisa 2/10. It was not the ROMs that was the problem, it was some defect in the static RAMs. now its working. The old Roms 341-0175-H and 341-0176-H are working. I burned new ROMs from

https://macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=14062

and http://www.bitsavers.org/bits/Apple/Lisa/firmware/ They are working perfect with my Lisa

I tested hashing algorithms from  https://bbbradsmith.github.io/ipstool/

with the following results:

341-0176-H.BIN

CRC:  546D6603

MD5:  77EF43CC3BEE73D4536DA29BDF6D64F6

SHA1: 2A81E4D483F50AE8A2519621DAEB7FEB440A3E4D

Size: 8kb

341-0175-H.BIN

CRC:  ADFD4516

MD5:  00F1238DD6A0A045A8D92F3C824008B6

SHA1: 97A89CE1218B8AA38F69F92F6F363F435C887914

Size: 8kb

So these two BIN files are working with Lisa 2/10 , H/88.
