Hi all,

I just got a imac g4 flat screen that has a green tint on the screen. I have tried dissembling it and reseated the monitor connections. There was no difference, I hooked up an external monitor which has normal color.

So I believe the video card is good, but I don't know what the problem is with the monitor and what kind of fix might be needed.

Re: Imac G4 Green Tint on the Screen

I've had issues with laptops and LCD panels doing something similar. Usually it's a tiny ribbon cable from the main interface circuit to the LCD display panel itself. If a regular monitor works fine but it's not on the LCD panel, then the video card should be fine. Maybe it's bad wires running to the panel itself?

The internal video connector on the G4 iMac is very fragile. It's surface mount, and doesn't take much to damage it.

I'd start there, and work your way up the neck, since external video is working for you.

I'd definity say its the

I'd definity say its the cable. When I dismanteld mine to upgrade the ram on the mainboard when I put it back together I acidently pinched the video cable. Has the same green tint now. I could of kicked myself :(

Any ideas if I can respice the cable or something?I gather the cable is composed of the folliwing, lots of little cables then with a metal mesh around them, then plastic covering? Does the metal mesh do anything? Or is it shielding.

You're correct that the mesh

You're correct that the mesh is shielding, but I wouldn't call that 'not doing anything'. It's also grounded, so if your pinch shorted a cable to the mesh, that could be your problem. Can you see the damage to your cable? Can you protect or reinforce the damaged area?

Yes, I can see the damage to

Yes, I can see the damage to the cable. I pinched some of the little cabes clumped inside. Should I strip the plastic back to try and protect them again?  I'll try and take a photo to show you what I mean before stipping ant plastic.

I would strip back and try to

I would strip back and try to repair the damaged individual cables. I don' think you have any other option, aside from buying a whole new cable.

I would replace the cable,

I would replace the cable, there. With that kin of damage in one spot, there may be damage elsewhere.

I still own one of those (the 20-inch moel), that I haven't used in years. I'm not sure if it works now, but it was my general writing station for over ten years, runing Panther. I loved the way that you could adjust the monitor on that freefloating arm, and that it used about as much desk space as a student lamp. I never understood why Apple phased out that design in favour of gigantic slabs.
