SE/30 "An error occurred while trying to..."

Hey Everyone, I am trying to get an install of System 7.1 or System 7.5 on my SE/30, and every time it gets to the final disk, cycles back to the first disk and throws up the following error:

An error occurred while trying to

  complete the installation. Installation

  was cancelled, leaving your disk

  untouched.

It's an almost stock SE/30. It has a 40MB HDD and 20MB of RAM. I've tried dropping the RAM down to 8MB to no avail. I've reinitialised the disk and run the "Test" from disk tools. If I manually copy over System, it'll happily boot.

I thought it may have been related to the Battery so I have replaced that too. Not sure if you have to reinitialise anything once the battery has been replaced, but I did try "Option Command P R" just in case.

I've traied an "Easy Install" as well as a "Minimum install for this Mac". Doesn't make a difference.

I'm stuck! System 6 seemed to work OK, and I only upgraded to get a later version of UnStuffit working...

I have a ROMulator on order. Should I just wait for that, or is there something deeper going on? (Cue ominous music)

Any advice gratefully accepted!

Cheers!

Does it boot now before the install?  To what version of OS? (About this Macintosh under the Apple Menu)

How many diskettes is your installation system?  Do you have a backup of the last install disk?

It boots but...

It came without an OS.

I stuck System 6 on it initially as I only had 2MB of RAM. That worked fine. I haven't yet put that back on but can do so.

I have tried System 7.01 (single disk) from Terry Stewart's page. That worked. Haven't tested it since, but I might have to.

I then moved onto 7.1.1 Pro. This was the first one to show the error. This was (from memory) a 6 disk set.

Finally after that one failed, I scraped together every Floppy I could find, serviced my FDD drive and tried System 7.5.3 coming in at 16 disks plus 3 "extra" disks. This also generates the same error.

Oddly if I simply "drag" the system folder from the 7.5.3 Disk tools set over to the HDD, it boots fine, but grumbles that it's the version for Floppy Disk, not for Hard disk, and to reinstall.

Tonight I might try 7.01 again, to see if the issue is related to the System version. That was the last "good" version I had.

Well that's a bit odd...

System 7.01 installs fine.

I got nothin' people. Any suggestions why 7.1 and later don't work but 7.01 does?

(For now I guess I'll stick with 7.01)

Hardware problem?

Do you have any other memory sticks, or a different SCSI hard drive you could try? As long as you're at it, make sure that any jumpers on the hard drive are set to SCSI channel 0 [zero].Does your 7.5.5 installer work on any other classic Mac?

I tried different RAM (No difference) and I don't have additional SCSI drives or additional Macs. (I got LOTS of other systems. Just no more Macs). For now I'll stick with 7.01. It does what I need if I use it in conjunction with a Basilisk II install.

Cheers!

Are you using pure 7.1 disks, or something for a specific system, such as Disks for a Duo? I advise 6.0.8 and 7.0.1 in any cse. Don't even try 7.5, as it will run like a sloth.

Try this set:

Thanks again

Cheers Timelord,

For now I think I'll stick with your advice. 7.01 runs pretty much everything I care about, and I have managed to use Basilisk II under Linux to do everything else I need, most notably running UnStuffit 5, which I needed to open some archives of software.

My next step will be to get a serial link running between my PC and the Mac so i can simply ZModem across files. I made a Null Modem cable but failed to notice that 8 pin Mini-DIN connectors have chirality and I'd bought the left handed one not the right handed one. D'oh!

Try the 7.1 disks that I mentioned. You should be able to use those. I know nothing about tha 7.1.1 version, but I suspect that it is specifically made for Duo laptops, LCs or something else, and is not ROM compatible. 7.1 does run on the SE/30, should you need it. I still advise setting up a System 6.0.8 device for maximu compatibility. It's a much aster env if you aren't running System 7 programmes.

Do you have a PPC 603e, 604, or 750 based pre-iMac Macintosh? If so, you can set up AppleTalk over serial and also network that Mac to your PC.

You should also look into the huge library of Hypercard games.

Serial FTW

Actually I managed to get my linux box set up as a TTY serial server, allowing me to use ZTerm to connect to it via Null Modem. I can then browse my Linux box and ZModem back files directly to the Mac :-)

All the games I want so far are working fine, (except Ultima II, which I suspect doesn't work on anything other than 68000 based Macs. It's a "self booter" floppy and very old.)

I only have the one Mac.

When I get a bigger HDD, I'll certainly look at partitioning this drive into 6.08, 7.01 and maybe a couple of other versions :-)

Also getting a CD-ROM tonight which will also aid in installing OSs.
