I'm trying to run the memory test routine from the Apple II Programmers Aid and the process is failing and I'm not sure what the fault is. The machine in question has 48K of RAM. Any tips on how to resolve this?

First question: can the machine boot normally, with or without DOS?
Try swapping the upper two banks of memory and re run the test and see if the crash happens at a different spot?
According to the manual, the error message you get is not due to the RAM test failing.
You can always try another method to test the RAM (see this post).
