Color Classic Processor Upgrade Questions

I have recently acquired a Color Classic and have a Quadra 630 logic board that I am planning on transplanting into it. The Quadra 630 board has a 68040 33MHz on board. I would like to upgrade to 66MHz and my question is this... Can I simply pop out the 33MHz processor and put a 66MHz in? Or would I need to utilize a PDS upgrade card?

Also...Is the Sonnet Presto Plus compatible with a Quadra 630 logic board?

Thanks!

Putting a 630 board in requires major surgery - google or search for Takky. It's a lot of work for a 68K upgrade - tens of hours of careful work. OTOH, a 575 logic board will plug in in place of the normal CC board, without major structural and re-wiring work on the CC. This is the 'Mystic' upgrade. Since 575 boards are now under $20, I cannot recommend an upgrade with a 630 board.

You cannot simply siwtch CPUs to double the speed; the clock has to be changed. But then nothing else would work if you simply doubled the clock speed! Having said that, 33Mhx 575 boards can be clocked to 40Mhz or even 43 Mhz - there are references and links to the mods required all over the place!

I don't know about PDS CPU cards.

Pretty sure not, and it wouoldn't offer much of a performance increase in any case.

best wishes,

No such thing as 66mhz 68040

I'm not sure if you are referring to a 66mhz 68040, but since you mention the Presto Plus upgrade I figure it's a possibility. Read this thread from the old forums.

Sonnet's website lists the 68040 as 66mhz. As noted in that thread, they are bullsh***ing.

Will Presto Plus Board work with Hi-Res Mod?

Thanks to everyone for clearing this up for me. I think I'll either keep the CC 100% stock or get a Sonnet Presto Plus board even if it's not truely 66MHz. Which brings me to my next question... ::)

Will the Sonnet board be compatible with a CC that has had the Hi-Res 67Hz mod done?

Thanks once again...

While everyone is correct tha

While everyone is correct that modifying the CC to use a 630 motherboard doesn't offer much in performance over just dropping in a 575 board. Still, it does offer one thing. After it's done, you can easily replace the 630 motherboard with a 6500 board for a huge speed increase.
