Another ADTPro install noob, grovelling for help.

I have am trying to install ADTPro on my Apple IIe, I think the connection is good. I can send ProDos to it via the bootstrap routine, which seems to work fine. It displays ProDos 8 v1.9 upon completion (my machine displays ProDos 8 v2.01 when it boots).

However, I when I attempt to "Send ADTPro serial client", it appears to proceed OK, I see the "Call -151" and ADTPro at the bottom of the screen in inverse text, it scrolls the text (hex?) across the screen, but when it finishes, the screen goes blank and nothing further happens.

I am concerned I might not have enough RAM, but I don't know how to determine it. I can see a couple chips on the motherboard labeled "64KX4 RAM" but don't know if that means anything. Would insufficient RAM produces the symptoms above?

My connection is via super serial card setup as shown on the ADTPro site.

I ordered the ADTPro boot disk, but if the problem is insufficient RAM, I imagine that will not help either.

Anyway, if anybody has a suggestion I would be very grateful. Smile

Just an update. I have been poking around on the internet trying to find out more about my Apple IIe, it has been around 25 years since last I messed around with one. I think I must have the Platinum IIe, it looks just like this photo on Wikipedia with the separate numeric keypad. So I think it should have the required 64K of ram.

ProDOS 8 v2.xx requires the 65C02 and the Enhanced //e, so ADTPro has a version of ProDOS that boot any 64K Apple.

I have just had that happen to me in the v2.0.1 version as well.. I had to try a couple times to get it to Start Up.. Make sure you have a couple floppies ready, so you can make more than one copy of the ADTPro disk...

I am concerned I might not have enough RAM, but I don't know how to determine it. I can see a couple chips on the motherboard labeled "64KX4 RAM" but don't know if that means anything. Would insufficient RAM produces the symptoms above?

That sounds like a Platinum //e, which came with the 64K RAM Card in the Aux Slot.. The Early //e came with 64Kx1 chips..

My connection is via super serial card setup as shown on the ADTPro site.

I ordered the ADTPro boot disk, but if the problem is insufficient RAM, I imagine that will not help either.

Run System Self Test, ( e.g. CTRL-Closed Apple-Reset ), check Cable connections, un-plug, re-plug, Try different Host computer, try different USB-to-Serial adapter, ( if your using one ).

Thank Mark. The self test says the system is Ok. I think the cable etc., is OK since I can transfer ProDos without difficulty. Also; I am now confident I should have enough RAM.

I should get the ADTPro boot disk in a couple days (it has been shipped), so hopefully that will get me communicating. In the meantime I might try bootstrapping a few more times since you mentioned you had a similar issue.

Have you checked this information and started using it this way ?

http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/bootstrap.html

Note that while DOS ADT runs in 48k, ProDOS ADTPro requires your Apple to have at least 64k of memory.

Also check this out

http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/connectionsserial.html

Such a setup works for me... without having an ADTPro Boot Disk the first time

The serial pinout for DB9 to DB25 looks like as follows (Null Modem Cable)

DB-9 DB-25 RS-232
Pin# Pin# Name
----- ----- ------
2 ------- 2 TxD
3 ------- 3 RxD
5 ------- 7 GND

7&8 4&20 (disables
1&4&6 hardware handshaking)

Within the DE-9 shell, tie together pins:
1&4&6 and 7&8

Within the DB-25 shell, tie together pins:
4&20

Thanks for the reply Tokabln. I have spent considerable time on the two web pages you mentioned, and as far as I know, my setup complies with those guidelines. Like I said, I think the connection is OK because I can bootstrap Prodos from Windows to my Apple repeatedly (and have done so). Also, I have since learned my Apple is the platinum so should have the required RAM.

My current plan is to wait for the boot disk to arrive, then try again.

About the RAM.... the factory IIE Plat (with built-in keypad to the right) always came with 128kb... and can be confirmed by opening up the case and looking at the *mini chip/card installed right next to the power supply. However, depending on how you acquired the IIE, some sellers actually remove it... these people think they are doing something special?!?!

Thanks for your reply Tim. You are referring to the 80 card, right? It looks OK. One the side of the card towards the back is the text "AIIE 80 COL/64K MEMORY EXPANSION". All chip sockets are populated both there and the mother board. Near as I can see, the Apple is in like-new condition.

Re: Another ADTPro install noob, grovelling for help.

An update. I got it working! The problem was some misconfiguration in my Windows installation. I don't know what it was, but a java update broke it completely, so I spent an hour or so trying to get it working again. I noticed when I did, the DOS box display was quite different than before. Before, it appeared to function OK, connected to the serial port OK and even allow me to bootstrap ProDos to my Apple, but when it tried to launch ADTPro itself on the Apple, it froze with a black screen.

Here is what I think:
The ADTPro install on Windows is more obtuse than simply running an Install program. It involves modifying the launch script to point to Java, and also requires copying a couple files into the Java ..\bin\ folder (near as I can figure..)
Unfortunately, there are several copies of these files squirreled away in various sub-folders within the ADTPro install folder, and it is not clear which ones need to be copied.

When I now launch ADTPro server on my windows machine, here is what the DOS box displays after initialization is complete, and I have opened the serial connection. It did not display this before (when it did not work). I don't remember what it DID say, but there was no obvious error message (to my untutored eyes anyway).

I have had some weird Issue like this too..

Installing on 64 Bit Windows and having the .BAT file launch the Wrong RXTX Library.. I had to comment Out some sections of the .BAT file to get it to work..

Glad you got it working...

Welcome to the ADTPro Club!!!!!

Re: Another ADTPro install noob, grovelling for help.

Thanks MarkO, it is good to be a member of the club. Prior to this, my Apple's networking ability consisted of getting a physical disk via the Post Office. Now I can actually download them to my PC and transfer to the Apple!

I did make one tweak- I assigned my Windows PC a static IP address. I had an episode this morning where the Ethernet option seemingly stopped working again. You can imagine my amusement. I finally realized that my router had assigned the Windows machine a different IP address (not so easy to figure out before my second cup of coffee).
