Apple 2 - How to tell if Rev0
Hi Folks - I am new and hoping that someone can help me determine  the rev# of the motherboard on this original Apple 2.

Serial # on motherboard = 2162

Serial # on bottom = A2S1-1892

Any help will be appreciated

thank you.

It is !

That one is definitely a Rev 0. Would you like to sell it?

That is awesome news!

Thank you!  Sorry - I am not interested in selling it.

But, looking at some of the other discussions in this forum, it seems that could be valued at $3-5K?  Is that about right?

Nice Rev 0

Wow, looks all original (except ROM's) and in great shape. Even has the early keyboard where the encoder protrudes out into the case... Be careful with those as the early designs apparently have issues with static discharge.

Here are a few links with some explanations; They are by Mike Willegal:

All the best.

Thx for the info.

Thanks for the information.  This is great.

Yes - it is in pretty good shape. I just need to clean it up a bit and see if I can get it to work.

We’re the ROMs upgraded ?  How might I get it back to its original state?

also - the speaker rattles around (by the keyboard). I need to figure out where it goes and how it gets re-attached :-). Fun weekend ahead.

The ROM's look like Applesoft replacements. Your Apple II would have originally came with Integer ROM's. Applesoft ROM's are an upgrade in that they allow you to use a much wider variety of software; and also allow you to boot directly into basic among a few other things.

Applesoft ROM's are the major difference between the Apple II & the Apple II plus, aside from all the other small improvements.

The speaker is usually just glued down in front of the power supply under the keyboard. Most Apple II's usually have a foam surround incasing the speaker; however the early REV 0 computers may not have had the foam surround yet.

It was actually the Autostart Monitor ROM that allows direct booting of the disk or BASIC, not the Applesoft ROM. Autostart + Integer BASIC was a standard configuration, as was Autostart + Applesoft.

Apple's official definition of an Apple II Plus is:

1.) Rev 1 (or newer) motherboard

2.) Applesoft + Autostart on the motherboard

Source: white Apple II Reference Manual, page 27.

There is no other meaningful difference between an Apple II and an Apple II Plus.

derp

That's just embarrassing for me, spreading misinformation  like that!

Dog Cow is 100% right about the autostart ROM.

Have fun with your REV 0 Mattesch. Post more photos if you have the time, I love looking at these early REV 0 Apple II's.

All the best.

Uggghhh!

sorry for all the re-posts.  There were server issues, I didn't realize it was reposting every time.  Anyhow, some fun experiences with the Apple2:

1.  It actually works.  I hooked up a monitor and was surprised by a screen full of "?" - I thought something was wrong.  The a friend on Reddit told me that is how the old Apple 2s boot.  Pretty funny,

2.  When I first got it, it had a different power supply.  Fortunately the original PS (pictured) came with it.  So, I replaced it - wanting to get it back to its original state.  Little did I know - but the upgraded power supply was actually an Applied Engineering HDD.  I had almost given it away - glad I didn't. It is now on Ebay, where someone has bid >$50.

3.  Last - I found these extra pieces - any chance these are the original ROMs mentioned above?

thanks again for all of the help. This is great.

No these are not the original

No these are not the original Integer roms but 13 sector disk controller PROMS (P5 and P6) - they go on the disk controller normally found in slot 6.

I saw your listing - the vulcan power supply is missing the controller card and hard disk - it's more likely the bidders are interested in the transwarp card.

Only the first 6000 or so

Only the first 6000 or so Apple IIs had rev 0 PCBs.  During the period when the II and II plus were produced at the same same time, they had the same PCB versions.  The difference amounted to badge, sticker on the bottom and ROMs.  It would be very easy to convert one to the other, if you could come up with a badge and ROMs.

regards,

Mike Willegal
