AppleScript Woes

My OS 9.1 system has a big red "x" on the AppleScript icon during boot up. This is the likely suspect for why Speech Recognition will not work (PlainTalk). System says it is version 1.8.3.

What can I do to trouble shoot this and get the x to go away and speech recognition to work?

I know it used to work on this system cut it has been well over a year since I got to touch this so my memory is not reliable.

TIA

You've got two versions of the Applescript extension installed. One has a TM after it and will have a lower version number. Delete that and all will be well.

I bet it happened after installing the Newton Connection Utilities. Same thing happened to me.

[takes off hat]

yes, that does appear to be the case.

I will pull that out.

[/puts hat back on]

So what will this mean for synching my Newton?

Finally got the time to sit down and try this but no dice.

I am back to playing the boot-with-no-extensions-and-thne-add-some-back-in-a-couple-at-a-time-until-I-find-the-problem game.

Huh, that's strange. It might have installed some other rubbish too, it's been a long time since I had to diagnose this problem...

Is there an "Applescript _something_" extension there too?

As for Newton synching, it has no effect. The installer just pops it in there because it can't find the (subsequently renamed) Applescript extension.

Re: AppleScript Woes

I have decided to completely rebuild the OS on this machine. As soon as I can get my hands back on my OS 9.1 disk, I will start from scratch. It is just as well since I will be adding new hardware to include a new 9G drive (with an 80-58 pin SCSI adapter), a PCI-PCMCIA card adapter (see related posts on wifi for PM8600), and upgrading the CD-to a CD-RW. I will also attempting to resolve he driver issue on the DVD drive plugged into my Sonnet Trio card. I have a 1TB USB Passport plugged in and will back up things there as well. Since I will be adding a drive, I will likely remove the current OS hard drive to give me a fall back option.

I figure if I just start over, it will be easier than trying to work with the current patchwork of extensions since the OS was up to 9.2.2 via Old World Support, but later downgraded to 9.1.1 with some of the extra stuff from 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 being left behind. It all worked well at one point, but the new hardware and the changed purpose of this machine really do deserve a clean install.
