Are the painted Apple II+s smooth underneath?

I have a II+ with paint in several that looks like it's about to chip away. There are also some other areas where the previous owner drilled holes into it and it's generally in a sorry state.

So I'm thinking of stripping, filling the holes and repainting it.

Would that require any type of special paint to keep the textured surface, or is that how the plastic is already moulded underneath?

Also, what's the best way to remove the existing paint?

Galaxina,

All you had to do was place Paint in the search box and this is what you come up with.

A lot of plastic model builders use a foaming ammonia-based oven cleaner (ie Easy-Off) to remove paint without damaging the plastic.

Put the parts in a garbage bag and give them good coverage with the foaming spray. Check occasionally applying more spray if necessary, and between six to 12 hours later you should be able to remove most of the paint with a scrub brush and soapy water. Repeat if necessary.

I've used this with enamel, lacquer and alkyd paints successfully. Not having a painted Apple II I can't give more than a general "this should work" recommendation. If you sand, you'll lose texture. If you use anything like paint remover, acetone or brake cleaner you risk weakening or damaging the ABS plastic.
