CFFA3000

Would like to hear from people that have put their names in for run #3, and would like to know if they have been notified for pre-order. Did the builder notify you by email or is there another site for issuing order? I have emailed him awhile ago about my interest and have not yet received any notification, so just curious. thanks.

Have you been keeping up with his project status page?

He made mention of exactly when he'll be contacting interested parties just a few days ago.

Re: CFFA3000

Hello AFmembers.....

well instead of guessing around it might be more usefull to read Richs blog.....

he anounced that he recieved the material and passed over the parts for assembly and that he expects them back in few weeks... that statement was given in mid of August.....

so let´s do some arithmetics together ... O.K. ?
let´s assume that mailing to the assembler, assembly, and mailing back from assembler would require
at least 1 week to , 1 week at, and 1 week back from assembler....
and lets assume - according to his statement that Rich want´s to test at least one or 2 cards from that batch...
so lets add another week for that....

the statements have been given at 18th of August ... that would result to a point between 15th and 18th of September to open the orderpages and send the mails to the people on the emaillist...

I hope that this will set closer limitation to the expectations....
I guess we will hear from Rich Dreher in that timeframe between earliest 10th September and farest 20th of September....

that´s at least the frame to expect if you would have read the statements in the blog....

instead of firing up here speculations i´d propose it to be more usefull, to instead just check out Rich Drehers
blog once each week and check if any update has been performed..... :

http://dreher.net/?s=projects/CFforAppleII&c=projects/CFforAppleII/main.php

just my 5 cents....

Re: CFFA3000

This afternoon I went up to the site to see if Rich had posted a list of folks (including myself)who have ordered a 3000 from Run 3.
He has not.
So I sent him another email just to be sure that I have made the list.
We all know these things go FAST.

Re: CFFA3000

Hello to all AF members.....

just as explained and expected the orders for CFFA3000 fired up.....
see posting right above by David_Schmidt with correct link....

I just hope that all also did read the entire mail from Rich Dreher .....

he explained several interesting facts:

the entire run contains 575 cards....

he expects by shipping the cards by batches determined by the arrival of payments

the shipping of all cards will take up to next 3 months
and last batch of cards to be released before christmas...

by limiting orders to 2 units per customer this means about 287 customrs will be served.....

so to those who like to get / or hesitate in PANIC....

- NOW its time to get the panic - if you don´t act to get on the orderlist....

He's updating the status page in batches, so if you ordered since the 12th, you're not up yet. It looks like initial shipments start the 21st.

Re: CFFA3000

I received and started using the card. Now that I have imaged all of my 5-1/4 floppies, what have you guys done with the floppies? Any value to them or just throw them in the garbage? I probably have about 500 floppy disks taking up space.

If they're all copies... and you really don't want them, eBay them and recoup your investment in the CFFA3K (won't be much). If they're originals, hold on to them.

You will want that full retro experience at some point or another. Keep some so you can hear the sounds.

Re: CFFA3000

I have several thousand original disks. I plan on keeping each and every one.

I was thinking about (with single sided disks that are copy protected) keeping side one intact, and re-writing side 2 with with cracked version. Just a thought.. In the event that side 2 contains a backup copy done by the original publisher, I'd leave it as such and just keep a homemade/copied disk with it.

Also, what is the value of the original CFFA from the early 2000's? Anything it can do that the moden-day cffa3000 can't? Just thought I'd ask before I get rid of it.

I use them as an immediate backup drive (activate 'your card' as needed) since popping the case to get to the CF cards on either the original CFFA or CFFA3K can be a hassle.

They were selling well on eBay, and an excellent return on CFFA3K upgrades.

At least one important difference is the 40pin IDE port. The old ones have - the CFFA3k don´t !
A lot of people forget, that that port permits access to the old IDE drives - and some guys
have such HD´s from former systems like Vulcan or the IDE Interface from Ing. Joachim Lange....

You can´t access such drives directly with CFFA3K.... and using a USB to IDE adaptor... well that´s
not everybody´s taste....

i keep the old CFFA´s

just my 5 cents

You can use a CF->IDE Adaptor. I used one of these to access an old IDE Drive. The only problem is, that you cannot close the lid, since the adaptor is a little bit to big. But for backups and stuff its ok. I have to agree that if you use the IDE-Drive on a regular basis and/or want to replace the org. interface card, there is little chance to get it done with the CFFA3K. There might be smaller CF->IDE Adaptors though.

Either way, i ordered 2 more CFFA3K to have one of my A2e and A2E with an internal harddrive+floppy emulation.

Spinning media is bad news - old spinning media is worse. I'd use those old CFFAs to make backup images of old drives and use virtual images from now on.

Hello David,
that´s just what i said....
of course CF card is more reliable than the drive ... but first you must access the drive - to get that stuff moved off from it - an transferred to new media...... and for that purpose the old CFFA cards WITH IDE Port are perfect !

That's true. But if you're currently using an IDE drive, you must already have a way to connect it up. And the CFFA3000 has a neat feature where it can automatically "rip" an image from anything already spinning in the system. Even if you have to go the CF-IDE adapter route, hopefully it's a single-use affair.

Re: CFFA3000

Hello David,
at least in my case it´s a little more than that... - i have several IDE drives from the mid 80´s to beginning 90´s
each 40 or 60 MB with plenty source coding in UCSD and under CPM with Aztec C worth to be rescued and moved in new
archives.... but i wasn´t aware of the feature of ripping the entire disk in one step.... seems i have to pick out that manual and reread some sections.... thanks for the hint !
