Indigo 350 MHZ iMac G3 (Ubuntu 6.10) Wifi Help

Hello! My 350 MHZ indigo iMac G3 is currently within the dark, ethernet cable lacking confines of my basement, otherwise known as my computer hoarding stash, and sadly it is the generation prior to the ones which will accept the AirPort card. Are there any other ways to allow it to connect wirelessly? Maybe an ethernet or USB dongle?

Thanks for all of the help! I know I have been mercilessly posting recently, and I apologize in advance should these posts be a nuisance.

Smiley,

I know this may sound kind of stupid, but I have some questions:

1. Do you have a router to connect to?
2. Where in your basement is your computer set-up?
3. Is this your house, do you own it?
4. Do you know how to make a CAT-5 Cable?
5. Do you have carpeting in your router location?
6. Do you have a sharp knife (Cutting a flap in carpet) and a portable drill with 1/4 inch Drill Bit?

If the answer is "Yes" to all of these questions you can hook up your computer.
No problem.

If you do not know how to make a CAT-5 Cable, you can Google a "How to make..." and it will show you step-by-step how to make one.

If your computer is located within 100 feet of your router, and you do not know how to make a cable, then you can go to the local hardware store (or eBay, or someplace that sells premade cables) buy a premade cable and increase the size of the hole you drill through the floor (next to the wall where it won't be noticable of course) to 3/4 inches in diameter to ensure that the CAT-5 Connector will fit through it.

Run your newly bought cable from your router to your basement computer and Viola!

I know; its a bit long winded, but I hope it helps sove the problem.

You can use a router in bridge mode sometimes to connect a network cable from the router to your mac. In the past I have done this with linksys routers, but it's been awhile, I'm not positive if this is still supported. Otherwise you need to put special firmware on it. Do you have an extra/old router you could try?

@Steven

Thank you for the help!

I do have a router to connect to, which is upstairs where the living room, bedrooms and screened porch get the best connection. Wireless capable devices work fine within the basement though, but that's the reason why it's far from the iMac G3.

I really do not have much carpet, just mainly linoleum, hard-wood, and concrete. Therefore no real locations to discreetly run a cord.

Thank you though, and I will keep that plan in mind.

@Smiggly

I'll look for a used router at a local goodwill or something of that sort, because I don't have a spare. Thanks!

Re: Indigo 350 MHZ iMac G3 (Ubuntu 6.10) Wifi Help

If you really want to use a wireless connection there is not really a need to restrict to airport.
Several companies offered wireless-network-devices operated on the USB-port.
The problem is of course, that only very few offered those devices with drivers to MAC 9.x OS...
my best guess would be to do a research within the internet and setting the priority to find those that offer the required drivers for OS9 and Linux ( hint : examine in Ubuntu the list of supported devices ) My first choice would be to examine the 3com and the Dlink pages.... they are the largest companies that manufactured such devices and there will be the best chance to find a device that would fullfill the required needs....

then if you get the desired USB-networkdevice you should set it to DHCP at the MAC and setup the correct channel and set the router to give that device a IP-lease by DHCP. If you only want to connect to the internet that should be well enough done...

the setup would become more complicated if you also intend to share printers or drivespace within the network, because
the you would have to create at one of the the computers in the net a so called "bridge-setup" to enable communication with the additional needed localtalk protocol or you would have to setup a network with a samba server on LINUX to enable filesharing by the IP-protocol.... with a litle bit spooky setup it´s also possible to do this by using one computer as webserver..... but that´s a time-eating task...

@SpeedyG

Thank you for the advice! I apologize for the late reply.
I've looked at the sites you mentioned, and believe I found a device that will work. The next challenge is simply that of opening my billfold and actually buying it.
