Is it mice? or is there a cure for a squeeky Disk II?

Hi,

I have several Disk II drives, two of which run reasonably quietlty. The others have varying degrees of squeek.

I thought this might have been the running rails for the head unit and tried a bit of oil on one and although it made a slight difference I wouldn't say it was brilliant.

Anyone else had this problem and found a magic cure? Am I looking in the wrong place or is there a specific type of oil to use?

Or is it old age creeping in!

Thanks in advance,

Richard.

Retro,

It's old age. Give it two Alieve tablets and it should run good all day.

It works for me. lol Smile

Easy Mate,

I have a couple of shots of Vodka before and a couple of shots of Whiskey after!!!!!

But on a more serious note..

Although the question was posted in a light hearted manner, If anyone knows how to cure the bloddy squeak I'd be very pleased to know!!

(Methinks I'm in for more of the same...)

Just guessing it is the slide rails on each side of the disk drive. Some grease should make it slide more smoothly. I would use a thick grease. Synthetic car grease, not a lot. That will not turn to oily state for a few hundred degrees. There is always the possibility that the drive was dropped and tracks are out of alignment. You could break the screws that hold the rails down one side at a time, then retighten them. That should relive any stress. You might try not tightening them all the way to see if the sound changes. Maybe the plastic part that moves is worn. You could try to shim the slides (2 round metal long rails) with small piece of electrical tape under them where they are held down.

Thanks for that, I thought it may be the guide rails. I'll try some grease and see how it goes.

It would be nice to have two drives sounding the same!!

Stereo. Now if there is some simple way to add a reverb to it.
