I've heard of others doing something similar to the Apple based hacks. IIRC someone even developed a *nix that makes a sort of WiFi network access disk out of the slideshow images folder.
But for building its the same general idea, get a laptop, flip the screen and mount it in a frame. Then set up a slideshow app and load it with photos
use jpegview, it allows you to do a slideshow of a folder on the hard drive or network. It also can start the slideshow as soon as the program opens so you can put it in the startup folder and it will give you an instant slideshow!!
its freeware so dont have fits.
