Dual G5 w/ malfunctional USB port

hello there all.

i just recently experienced what seems to be a fried front USB port.
my sister was having trouble with her photo ipod charging on her computer, figuring it was her cord, i tried it out on my machine only to find that when i plugged back in the USB MIDI device i had connected there were no lights(no power).

i plugged it in back and it worked fine, so i tried a usb bluetooth dongle and that wouldn't power up either.

is it possible that her cord may have frayed and fried this port?
and if so, does anyone know of any affordable solutions to get me back on the fronside USB wagon?

it's a 2.0 dual G5 running a PPC 970 (2.2)

well....

i just shut 'er down for a few minutes, went and prayed to the gods of electronics and everything seems to be functional again, but i'm still curious as to what might have happened.

i blew out the port and examined the connector pins, so for now it's a mystery to me.

any ideas?

port power overload?

has happened with my iBook before, usually because I overload a port accidently. This comes in the form of a Laptop drive with a bad USB->IDE board that sucks too much power. So it shuts down the USB Port. That's all I can sum it up. and when it does it on me, a quick restart fixes it.

What's probably happening is

What's probably happening is that the cable is damaged, and shorting out somehow. The port detects this and shuts itself off to protect it and the device from damage. Usually you have to reboot the computer (or sometimes even unplug and replug it from power) to enable the port again.
