I am trying to get a drive to show up either in Disk Utility or the desktop and need help.
The drive in question is a 500GB SATA drive from a new DISH network STB. I took out the drive and put it into an external drive enclosure that has SATA connectors inside. So far so good.
But the USB connector on the outside of the enclosure is a male connector just like my eMac (or any Mac). I don't have a USB cable with male connectors on both ends (have never seen one either).
So I have been trying all afternoon to use the ethernet connector on the outside of the enclosure. I have a regular CAT5 cable from it to my ethernet port on my eMac.
I have been fiddling around with the Network and Sharing settings but cannot get anything to show up on the desktop or via the GO menu and Connect to Server in the finder.
Can this be done or do I have to connect it to router first?

Sounds like your external drive enclosure is actually a NAS enclosure. The USB port on the back of it would be for chaining another hard drive to it for increased network storage, not for linking the unit to a computer over USB.
It's most likely that the enclosure has a built-in Web interface; you'll want to find out what the default IP is for it so you can set the IP address/subnet mask on your eMac appropriately.
Or, you could just buy a cheap SATA-to-USB adapter.
That makes sense (the usb port)...thanks for clearing that up.
How do I find the default IP address for it?
One of two ways:
1. It's likely listed in the manual, assuming you still have it or can download it from the manufacturer.
2. Connect both the NAS and the eMac to a router and see if the NAS shows up in the ARP table. The process for doing so, and the likelihood of success, may vary.
THe default IP might also be on a sticker or something on it's bottom. Just a thought.
