I have a PowerBook G3 233Mz with 160Mo RAM.
Is it enough to install OS X?
Will it be slow? :?
I believe that if its the first G3 powerbook then installing os X is impossible without additional software.
It would also be dog slow with that speed of processor and amount of ram.
I have 10.3.5 running on a 300MHz B&W G3 with 128MB RAM...it's slow, but not horribly so.
10.3 cannot run on a Mac without build in USB. Unless i am mistaken that model powerbook does not have it, so unless you do some software hacking, its not gonna install.
It's not so hard, Google for Xpostfacto and off you go
XPostFacto will let you install it, but it will also be dog slow. My personal opinion of minimum requirements are 256B of ram minimum, 500MHz G3, or a 400MHz G4. For a smooth running machine running multiple programs, 512MB of RAM, 800MHz G3 or G4, An AGP Video card with 32MB of ram or more (for QE).
I agree with most of your personalopinion of minium requirements, Stuka. However, I used to run a G4 400 (AGP) with a gig of RAM and Panther ran very well on it. Also, a G4 with multiple processors like the G4 450 and G4 500 (gigabit ethernet) runs Mac OS X like a champ.
My single G4 500 works just, it could be faster, but then so could my G5. A G4 is reccomended for Panther, as it kinda depends on the velocity engine to keep things running smoothly.
A Quadra 650 (or Centris 650) running with a 0.05MHz G3 w/ 36MB o' ram

Edit: I forgot to mention that I got a hacked version of 120.3 on a 200Mhz PCC Powerbase w/ 16MB Ram. It took a long time to get it to load. I think it took about .95 days to get it through to the login screen. (I did the install w/ 160MB ram.) But that was my experience. I did use XPostFacto to load it, but I did my own hacking to get 10.3 on it.
I'm running Panter(10.3.6) on my B&W and it only has a 450MHz G3 in it. It seems to handle it quite well.
I have 1GB of ram and Quartz Extremem enabled on my Radeon 9200 pci. Expose looks so nice now.
The Centris 650 is a 25mhz 68k EMULATING a G3. Plus, it takes about a week to boot. Thats 8 hours just to recogise the keyboard! So the actual lowest you can get while having it boot in reasonable time (under 15min) is a 350mhz G3 (bare minimum).
And the lowest is a 286 that's so old it works in khz, which belongs to a friend of my Dad's. It takes about several weeks to recognise the RAM.
Oh I ran OSX at 400 and 550MHz in my gigabit, and it was plenty usable for most task. But it would quickly screach to a crawl when I realy started to do work on it. At 1.33GHz now on a DA board, its much more usable, and slows down far less.
I've bought a USB-card for my PowerBook,
but I don't believe I'll install Mac OS X.
Mac OS X.3 need at least 1.5 Go (hard-disk),
I only have 2 Go.
Mac OS 9 is rather fast.
When I buy an iBook or a BowerBook G4, I will install Mac OS X.5 !!!
Too black for OS X.
Thanks you.
A 233 iMac easily boots os x in under 15mins...and is quite useable...with a few apps open, so I would say thats the bare minimum.
I also have a powerbook G3 233 with 160MB Ram... I am also running Panther on it at a suprisingly usable speed. Obviously it took years to install and takes a while to start up but as long as you dont have too many things open at once its quite good.
Word of warning though download and install cocktail so that you can turn off all of the interface effects. Watching the dock try to magnify or the Genie minieffect is truely stomach heaving to watch.
Another problem may be the slow hard disks apple bundled with the machines. A faster drive makes a lot of difference as with only 160MB ram panther frequently needs virtual memory. lots of it.
