iBook 333 and OSX

Ok, I have the opportunity to buy an iBook (indigo) 333 with 128mb ram and 10gb harddrive for a decent price. How good/bad would OSX run on this machine? I know this wouldnt exactly be the best machine to run it on and the Mac minis are cheap, but for what I might be able to get it for its my only option for X if I wish to get/install it. Also, is there anything I should be cautious about when going to install it if I get stubborn and try it anyway?

I think the main problem woul

I think the main problem would be that MacOs X would run at 800X600 resolution on a 12" which depending on what you are trying acheive may not be all that useful. After running macos x on my ibook for about a week i re-installed 9.

You might also wish to consider bumping the ram up to 256 mb.

Hmmm...

I'll take that into consideration. I know it wont be an OSX powerhouse, nor will it be able to run large and/or multiple apps and keep up (if run them at all), but it would be something to tinker with I suppose. I do like OS 9.2, so I might leave it on there if it works out ok. I'm not really concerned with its overall usefullness, as I have a Dell laptop as my primary portable machine, but I'd like to erm.... I'm babbling, too much caffine, its late......

Thanks for the info though.

PS: are these upgradeable as far as the CPU goes or am I stuck with what it is? Just a thought that I imagine is a no...

Not too bad

I currently use 10.2.8 on my clamshell (Tangerine, 300Mhz, 40GB HD, 160MB RAM) and it works fine, the screen res is a bit small, but I live with it, however, when 10.4 is released, I'll run that on a Mac mini, (i will buy it when they ship with 10.4), it is going to use OS 9.2 and mabye 8.6, but 10.2.8 is great and not too slow (neither is 10.1 on my 7500/604 120Mhz, but that's another story)

x on a clamshell

I'm running 10.3.7 on my 366MHz Indigo with 128Mb ram. I'm multitasking with Safari, iChat and aMSN all running. Its not bad at all, but I think I need a bit more ram. Go for it. If all else fails you can reformat to a lower version of X.

OSX on the older ibooks

I have two iBooks at home an older Tangerine and a Firewire Graphite and i'm running OSX on both. 10.2 on the first gen iBook and the newest Panther on the Graphite. The Graphite works great for internet, email, DVD Movies, syncing my iPod, iPhoto (newest iLife 04 version, used a hack for that), etc... while the older ibook works great for internet and email. Both use the airport cards which are getting pricy on Ebay but are well worth the money.

Well....

Unfortunately the guy sold the iBook before I could scrape the cash for it, so it looks like I wont be getting it. Thanks anyway. Sad
