trying to up grade my clamshell's hard drive

I have installed the hard drive(40 GB Fujitsu ) and tried to started with the os X 10.3 c.d.. All I get is the folder with a question mark. I know I left out a very important part right? Is there some way to boot from the dick if the hard drive thats in( the clamshell 300 one usb port) now is unformatted?

Thanks!

Hope you can help!

CD-ROM

Is the cd-rom drive attached? Also make sure you hold down 'c' when booting.

Yes the cd-rom drive is in and spinning.
I tried holding down the "c" when booting but I still get the finder folder with a question mark flashing.

ditto

Try OS 9 or 8.5/6 and see if that works. Also, don't use CD-RW backup copies of an OS. I don't think the CD-Rom reads them.

cd-rom

I did the same thing, I have a 366 MHz ibook clamshell, just put in a 40 gb hard drive and booted it up.
Make sure that your holding down the c key before you turn it on, it the screen dosen't turn on for a while, then it's working.
Tip. Try installing mac os x 10.01, then when you get that installed, pop in the mac os whatever discs and wa-la!
