Powermac 7200/90

I recently saved a powermac 7200/90 from a skip and have been having a play with it. Only being used to OSX I'm a bit lost. I've been trying to either connect it to my iBook or direct to my broadband connection without much sucess.

It is running OS 7.5.2 but most of the apps seem to have been lost. It has an ethernet connection and a modem with a plug type I've never seen before. It ain't got a CD so any apps I load on to it will either have to go via the iBook or floppy.

Any ideas (other than putting it back in the skip)?

For Ethernet connectivity, yo

For Ethernet connectivity, you'll want to click on the Apple Menu, go down to Control Panels and select TCP/IP. You'll want to select Ethernet from the drop down menu, then either select DHCP, or select Manual and input the IP address and other pertinent information.

The easiest way to make the two talk to one another is to hook them up through a router and enable sharing on the 7200.

Cheers,

What to do with a 7200/90

This is NOT a fast machine. However, I think you can bring it all the way up to MacOS 9.1 (you need to build up a good collection of old Mac software if you plan to salvage these old machines) and you can probably find a lot of old apps kicking around. At least it's a PowerMac, despite being a slow one. Make sure it has a good bit of memory though. I had mine set up as a ADB-based web cam for a while, but it's retired.

Tanzania, not Tazmania

Go here for info:

http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/7200.shtml

The 7200 used a motherboard similar to the somewhat strange Tanzania motherboard like the 4400 and a lot of the clones. It only accepts FPM RAM, EDO will not work. Sonnet made a Crescendo/7200 G3 daughtercard which also added a couple of more RAM slots. You see them on eBay occassionally. But with Beige G3's selling for as cheap as $10 now, the truth is, why bother?

turkey brain

Actually, I may not know what I'm talking about. I just went back and rechecked and maybe it wasn't similar to the Tanzania at all. The Tanzanias were out and about at the same time. Somehow I got that mixed into my memory of it. The 7200's were Apple's attempt to make a Powermac as cheap as possible, so it's performance was minimal. I had a 7200/75 way back in the 90's until one night while I was in a chat room and on ICQ and checking my email, the powersupply blew sparks and died right in front of me. I didn't bother to resuscitate.
Sorry for the mistake. The trytophan is starting to circulate.
