Booting from external Firewire drive

I have an external firewire hard drive that I just installed Tiger on. Startup Disk shows it has a valid system folder. Holding down the Option key down at boot shows the external as a valid boot device.

But if I choose the external it just boots off the internal. I cannot get it to accept the external as the boot device.

Is there a trick I am missing?

Have you tried pulling the dr

Have you tried pulling the drive out of the enclosure and installing it into the Mac? If so, does it boot from there? If it doesn't boot, then your OS is just hosed. If it does, then there's something weird about that FW enclosure.

Since it is an iMac DV I will

Since it is an iMac DV I will try that as my last resort.

What should the jumper be set to on the external drive? When I installed the drive I followed the instructions to use the drive as a slave (IIRC). Would that be the problem?

That could be your problem. T

That could be your problem. Try setting it as master. Usually thats what they are set for.

Still Need Help

Currently the drive jumpers are set for "Single or Master" (standard installation, no jumper shunt)

I tried "dual master" and "slave". Neither of those would work either.

I also did a "archive and install" with Tiger. It went smoothly and "startup disc" control panel shows the external drive as having Tiger on it to boot.

But when I restart I get a very quick question mark/folder and than the good folder sign.

I assume it is reading the external and doesn't like the system folder and than switches very quickly to the internal drive and completes the boot process.

The process I am doing with this external is using a Tiger upgrade DVD. The install program says I can install Tiger on the external because I have Panther on the internal.

Anyone know why this doesn't work. I have even tried repairing the disk permissions on the external but still won't boot from it.
