Differences between Disk II models?

Can anyone enlighten me on the internal differences between the older Disk II's (rainbow cable) and the newer ones (grey cable)?

The mechanisms sound different when in operation... and I've found, over the years, that the older ones seem to be both more reliable and better at extracting data from flaky disks.

A Matter of RAM

I am not sure if this subject has been touched upon or not, but as I was driving back home from the store this morning (pondering the universe as we know it), I wondered why there is a limit on the amount of RAM accessable on an Apple II?

I know that somewhere I have read that the IIgs can only access 8 Meg of RAM.
Most RAM cards are 256 K to 1 Meg, with the exception of 1 AE Card that has 1 Meg Main RAM with a daughterboard of another 1 Meg.

Apple II users have made great strides the last 15 years with Mass Storage, Speed, and many other areas, except the RAM Limit.

Apple II Replica

With all the brilliant Apple I replicas there are I got wondering, how possible would an Apple ][ replica be? If we could get permission from Apple (rather then make an illegal clone like others did back in the day) who would be interested in such a hacking project? I know that it would be hard, no doubt about that! But surely something like this would be fun for those interested in an Apple ][ clone and that if people wanted it they would work for it? What do you guys here think?

Apple //e Platinum keyboard issue

Hey guys,

I am an old school apple II guy who recently decided to buy some old machines (used the library machines when I was a kid, couldn't afford them), but my apple //e platinum is having some keyboard issues. I am hoping to get some insight or assistance troubleshooting it.

My "2 w d x c" keys do not work. I have a suspicion that it is the UE14 IC (in this case a KR9600-PRO), but I can't really be sure. C70 looks ok, but who can say. I think that would only cause issues with timing anyway, not a group of keys never working at all.

Convert Bootable .DSK Images to Bootable .PO images?

I have recently acquired an Apple IIGS, which I am using along with ADTPro and an 800k floppy drive to create bootable 800k floppies for my machine. However, I do not yet own a Disk II drive, so I cannot yet write programs to 140k floppies. Would it be possible to create a bootable 800K floppy from a 140k disk image?
