Powering up an old computer

I apologize for the question, but I have many doubts regarding some answers found on the web.In the past I powered an old Apple IIe, which had been at a stand still for several years, obtaining the "cooking" of the infamous RIFA 0.47 uF power supply capacitor; the problem was solved by replacing the capacitor. Now I have to revitalize another computer, my question is this:Does it make sense to use a variac to progressively power the computer?Would I have saved the original capacitor with this procedure? If so, what is the feeding progression to use? With w

IIc video port to composite adapter?

Has anyone made this adapter?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/193393714278

Apparently it merely pulls the NTSC composite signal from the video port (as well as the audio signal from the same port)... is that it??

https://devonhubner.org/AppleIIc_Video_Port_Breakout/

Word is that the output quality is noticeably improved over the regular composite... why would that be?

So many questions...

Mega II Chip on the IIGS

Hiya folks,

So, as I understand it, the IIGS has a single chip which is essentially emulating all of the functions of the original Apple II. So, since the computer would boot by default to the BASIC prompt, does that mean that the computer was designed to boot directly into the Mega II chip in "emulation mode" and not use any of the higher 16-bit level stuff unless necessary/prompted?

Apple II plus keyboard encoder test

Hi All,

I'm a newbie here.

I just picked up a Darth Vader Apple II plus. Got it to boot with chime but only the reset and CTL keys work. I know tose keys don't go through the encoder. I'm trying to figure out if the problem is on the encoder board or down stream (main logic board).

I have +5v and ground going to the encoder board.

All caps have been tested, encoder chip reseated, ribbon cable between main board and encoder checked. All good.

Put a scope on the encoder board and checked the 555 timer (no pulses) and the encoder IC (no pulses either).

342-0132 Keyboard ROM

Have an 1983 Apple IIe (REV B) which has had the enhancement kit installed (CD, EF, VIDEO, 65C02).  It also has a new ROM in the Keyboard ROM position, simply marked "KEY."  How can I tell if it is a 342-0132 A, B. C, .... whatever?  And, really, what is the difference between the REVs?

Thanks!

Apple II monitor starting to blink/flicker?

Hello all - I have an Apple IIe computer connected to an Apple II monitor.  I rarely use it but when I turend it on recently I noticed that the monitor started to blink or flicker every couple minutes.  I checked and adjusted the manual monitor settings but that did nothing to change this.  Is this something I can fix without having to open up the monitor for electronics work or soldering/desoldering?  Thanks for any info on this!

Apple IIe PowerOn

I had to take apart the original power supply of my Apple IIe to get it repaired, in the meantime I had to power my Apple IIe by taking the right supply voltages from an atx power supply which apparently works well. I plugged in and turned on my Apple IIe.The computer appears to be coming on, but a white screen appears on the screen which then disappears and is alternate with a black screen with white horizontal stripes, as if doing a test. What is the problem?

Thanks

G.
