The Norse Wanderer is a port of my original Apple II pirate BBS, recovered from original disks. This isn't a recreation of what I remember the BBS being like — the actual BBS software and its data came off those disks and were ported to run again. I've been working on this pretty much nonstop since April 8, 2026, piecing together disks from different points in the BBS's history, recovering the data, and getting the original software running again. I'm finally at the point where I can put it in front of the people who actually remember it.
One of the more interesting parts of the recovery was reconstructing the user database. I had multiple versions of the BBS on different disks from different periods of its history, so I was able to cobble the data together and recover 230 original user accounts that are still active. If you were a user of The Norse Wanderer back in the day and remember your old handle and password, there's a very good chance your account is still there. If you remember your handle but have forgotten your password, let me know and I can look it up for you.
I did take a couple of liberties where the original hardware and single-user communications model obviously don't make sense today. The sysop menus have been modified, and the communications layer was changed so multiple people can be online at the same time and I can actually live chat with callers. Other than that, the goal was to keep the user experience as accurate to the original BBS as I could, including the Wandering Norseman online trading game and the original new-user voting system. New users apply for access and get voted on by the other crewmembers. I will be auto-validating accounts to get things seeded for now.

I'd really like to see some of the people who remember this stuff log in and use it again. I'm also happy to answer anything about the recovery process, disk imaging, or the port itself.
I made this for the community, so those of us who were there could relive those days, as they actually were. I hope you enjoy it, and that it takes you back to those early days.

I originally ran the system on XBBS a modified version of GBBS, then when I got a PC a modified WWIV system.I hope you enjoy it, and it brings back some great memories. Your account has been validate.

Thanks, so is this online browser window iteration a re-do of your XBBS software?
I'm not familiar with XMMS - I know GBBS/ACOS, MACOS and METAL and their GBBS-like flavours, but XBBS is either new to me or long forgotten.
XBBS was just modified GBBS, then 3 of us from highschool wrote our own system from scratch, well mostly my 2 friends wrote it... This is the authentic reproduction of the system on modern hardware. You can read more about it in the History on the webpage. Thanks for checking it out, I am hoping that it builds some community there.
