Apple //c

Try looking on Applefritter's old site. (It's still there for
reference and reading.) There are a few threads there on the
Apple //c and c+. I own one and use it once in a while. Neat
computer. First generation laptop. Not much hack potential.
Pretty much a 'sealed unit' as far as that goes. The forum
and threads here are still fairly new, so feel free to start
a discussion about this here if you have ideas, pics, specs,
etc.

"Not much hack potential."

I disagree... the problem is people like them too much (do you see what IIc+'s sell for on eBay?!)

I'd like to put an LC III+ board in a IIc+, replace the 3.5 floppy with a superdrive, use it with the green IIc monitor to run some 68k BSD variant, but I can't shell out $100+ for a computer I am going to rip apart. Still, a desktop mac with a built in keyboard is a neat idea.

Also, less tearing, I intend to use my IIc as a dumb terminal for my ANS, if I can figure out how to connect the serial ports (and remember how to work an Apple II, find terminal software, etc). Ok, not really a hack, but still, its an idea.

Also, I have a hack in the works (setting up the prototype now) that involves the IIc, but it doesn't belong on this side of the forum, and I have to keep it a secret until I see how much I can sell them for (hoping to break even!) I promise to document well on this site, so stay tuned! As far as I can tell, its totally original, and totally beautiful, poetic, really.

Also, don't the tech specs for a IIc+ remind you of an SE? What would it take to get Mac OS on a IIc+? Is that even possible?

i don't blame you

I've always loved the IIc also, with the little monochrome monitor and stand, very sexy, but my first computer was a Commodore 64, not so sexy. If I had that right now, I'd superglue it 2 or 3 stories up McBryde (the CS building at VA Tech).

Not for nothing, but does anybody else feel that "software engineering" is a crock of sh!+? VA Tech's Computer Science Department recently left the College of Arts and Sciences (which split into College of Arts and College of Sciences last year) to be included in the College of Engineering. If I was an engineer I'd be livid. CS is a subset of Mathmatics!! Just what materials do they think they are engineering? Magnetic fields? Electrons? I think it is akin to an art student being refered to as a 'color engineer' or a theater major being a 'drama engineer.' The CS faculty are the biggest brutes on campus (next to Hokies football). The hype is better than the game (degree).

There was a IIc Hack

There was a japanese hack where a IIc was gutted and a G3 was installed in the IIc's shell. Amazing hack, but I don't kow if its still online. There was a thread on it in the old forums.

Mac OS on a //c+

I don't think it's possible to install any Mac OS on
a //c or //c+ as a //c is an 8-bit system and Macs are
16-bit systems.

IIc Hack

Actually I think it might be possible to fit a small Mac
board like from a 128k, 512k, or 1meg "Mac-in-a-box" type
computer into a //c. Those Macs also used a similar key-
board layout so it would be possible to use the existing
//c keyboard. The 3 1/2" drive could also be a drop-in as
well.

Hmmm...Something to think about?

I wouldn't want to disassemble the only //c that I have
right now, but if I got another (preferably dead one) I
would attempt it. Seems like a do-able hack that would be
useful even today. A Mac //c+ maybe?

To harryhumbucker

This would make an excellent addition to the thread about "Vintage Hacks" that woogie was trying to start here. Let's run with this and see if anyone can do something with it! Can you post more info on that thread? Don't give up on your idea. Maybe you will get more help from others here.

Oh yeah, I've got an old //c that my uncle gave me to mess with. I use it to write stuff with and to run a spreadsheet program. Am presently looking for games to run on it. I like those old games! I'm
getting ready to get an old Apple IIe to hack on. Maybe paint and a
few lights inside to start. I want to make a see-through cover for the top so you can see the lights inside.

I might take and try some kind of cosmetic hack for the power supply on my //c. Was thinking of making it look like a real brick!

Great hack!

Harry;
Sounds like a great hack in progress! You just GOTTA get some
pics and post links in the "Vintage Hacks" part of the Apple II
area.

A good source for LED's and other parts is your local Radio Shack
store. Not only do they have a large assortment of parts, but the
staff at the stores are familiar with hackers/modders and can make
good recommendations on your projects.

The Laser 128 RULES!

The //c+ was rushed out to compete with the Laser. Supposedly, it never quite caught up with the only clone ever to kick Apple's tuschie around the courtroom. I nabbed one on eBay because it was one of the three computers I'd considered to replace my Commodore 64 back in the day. I just LOVE the expansion slot on the side of the thing!

But I'll probably hack it someday anyway . . .

Hacking the Laser

Whoa! You got a LASER? And you want to hack it? They are
probably worth a little more than an actuall Apple //c.
Maybe some kind of internal hack like an accellerator or
something like that, but I wouldn't hack the outside or
peripherals. Just a thought...

As you mentioned, the Franklin LASER series of computers
competed successfully against Apple back in the day. This
makes it a desirable piece to add to a vintage Apple col-
lection.

I guess a 1400c/G3 transplant is out then? Looks like I'll need to hack the Portable after all . . .

Gosh, woogs! =8-0 You really ARE an oldtimer . . . Wink I thought I was the only cantankerous coot around here who remembered this puppy. The third choice was a Commodore 128, cuz I figured CP/M was a mature business environment. I finally went with a Tandy 1000SX, one of the very first "kinda, sorta, when the weather is just right AND it's not in a cranky mood compatibles." I figured I could always get parts and support at Radio Shack . . . *GAAAAK!!!!!!! was I ever a naive n00b! *

That sucker (with swank CGA monitor!) did last for-freakin'-ever though, I'll give it that. The last time I moved, I spiked it into a container parked down in the loading bay . . . from the top of a 10' stepladder up on the loading platform!

Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute Acute

There were Tandy T****s scattered . . . around a little bit, disappointing results, that was one tough lil' mutha . . . It only had a dinky 60w PSU, only about 15w more than a contemporary Mac. HEH! Thanks for the heads up about Laser collectability, your modness, sir! =8-}

When did that happen, BTW?

* . . . still need to get a C128 and another C64. :ebc: *

Franklin/Laser

You're confusing two different clones. The Laser 128 was made by VTech. Franklin made the ACE 100, 500, 1000, etc.

YEP! It's from vTECH . . .

. . . here's the scoop on the 128.

http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=13

. . . I did get a "typing tutor" from them to learn to touch type because we'd ordered a Gerber Sprint their 2nd or 3rd generation vinyl cutting workstation (the first one WITH a ritzy TTL monitor and preview instead of a row of LEDs and plotting everything on paper for preview). . . set me back about $35 or so . . . its KBD was a LOT better than the one on that $20k+ job from Gerber.

GRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yer RIGHT! It is late here, I was "multi-tasking", and I just
plain had a brain cramp! (old guy thing) Thanks for catching that!
I was looking right at the information and typed in the wrong
stuff and didn't "proof" it.
