one-two punch, dead imac #

my imac (blue 350, 384 ram) died today. (rIp) was running and then SNAP (sharp snap, not too loud) and that was it. totally dead. unresponsive. had it on an apc strip (not ups, but top model strip). nothing else in apartment showed any sign of surge. bye bye power supply?

that's the two punch. here's the one ...

coupla days ago, the read-write head started doing that rythmic purring thing, prr prr prr, about every second. it would stop when the computer slept, and sometimes when the mouse was stationary. i backed up what i needed, so that's not a problem. but the computer not working is. (i gave my good one to my kids and they need it for school.) can't see putting the drive in anything else, since it seems doomed anyway. replace the power supply and drive?

one-two punch, dead imac

thanks. yeah, that's what i thought. i guess i was half hoping that someone out there would say "HEY, THAT'S EASY TO FIX, JUST TAKE A BIT OF CHEWING GUM AND ..."

oh well. at least i had time to back up the drive.

one nice thing ... for what i paid for the 350 g3, i can get a lot more computer now.

Yu could try to vrify if it i

You could try to verify if it is just the p/s the went. A sharp snap could be a fuse or other component shorting/blowing/burning. You might be able to do an iMac -> ATX hack and still have a useful computer. You'd need to solder a VGA plug onto the mainboard, as the 350 BlueBerry is the only slotloader that doesn't have it...

I hve a hard tm findng

I have a hard time finding info on recasing the slot loading 350mhz models. I have one at my desk with a slowly dying picture tube and I would like to recase it into a small atx case but I only seem to find info on recasing older rev a-d imacs.

Are there any locations of the info?

A real quick Google finds Marathons iMac on ATX kit. If I do a little more searching and find a how-to I'll link here. The price on the Marathon kit isn't bad for what you get, but it's outta stock. For a good reason, I'm sure. Given a dead slotloader and some spare cash, I'd buy the kit rather than spend a whole buncha time hacking and fabbing my own adapter.

Gadgetopia shows that the kit was going for $59.

Marathon's kit...

I've contacted them a coupla times about their iMac on ATX kit. They state that the same components used for the kit are used in the slot-load iRacks, so they've discontinued the kits so they can sell more iRacks.

I told them that if they made more components, then they could sell both, and make more customers happy.

"Y'see, my small, faith-based organization simply does not have the funds to shell out for an iRack, much less a rack to store it in. All we wanted to do was make the best of the unfortnate setback to our group from the loss of our two iMacs..."

They are automatons. Usually, I pull the Reverend card, and get a little bowing down, if you know what I mean... I got nuthin...

Anyway, they are supposed to contact me once they start selling the kit again. I can only hope that with the introduction of the Mac Mini, and the ever increasing number of flyback-dead iMacs, it will be more cost effective for them to sell the kit instead of the rack.

How dissapointing that they purposely are not selling the kit so that they can sell the more expensive kit.

I am intrigued by the imac in an atx case kit. Only 59 dollars? Thats cheap. That means for a total of 59 bux, i can have a complete imac in a case with no other out of pocket expenses. Nifty.

I agree... very dissapointing. The way I see it, if they recieve a lot of customer inquiry about the kit (hint-hint), and said customers express the disappointment at the kit's unavailability (hint-hint), they might come around.

Either that, or someone else needs to start making their own kit and selling it. I would, but I don't know a soldering iron from a curling iron...

That never came up in my searches, because he never put "slotload" or even slot on the page... Not all slotloaders are DV. ::)

Just to let you know...

I was just told by an employee of Marathon that the iMac-on-ATX kit will not be sold anymore. When I specified that I was looking for an affordable way to convert my dead iMacs to ATX, he informed me that they still have the iRackDV. I proceeded to let him know that $400 is not an affordable solution, that I could buy two iMacs for that. His response?

"Sorry, we're not going to do anything to help you."

Guess who won't ever get any of my business now... go on... guess...

So, who's up for mass producing slot-load iMac to ATX kits?

I'm still wondering, does any

I'm still wondering, does anyone have a method or knowledge on adding the external video port to the abundance of dying imac 350 systems we have here?
