OK, heres the whole sorry tale…
My Hard drive has suddenly shrunk, not quite disappeared but shrunk. I had just installed OS 10.2 on it and the updaters. Then when I restarted the boot into X went wromg and left me with a grey apple and mussed up video. Wanting to getback to OS 9 I turned off the mac and unplugged the Drive with 10 on it from my 8500.
When I plugged it back in it didn't turn up on the desktop.
So I looked in Apple System profilerand this is what I saw...
(BTW I have rectified the ID problem, the jumper came off)
The drive is a IBM 4Gb SCSI drivemanufactured to Apple Specifications.
It seems to spin up OK and I can hear the head moving around inside and then giving a very fast double click when power is removed.
The computer is aPowermac 8500 with a XLR8 G3 upgrade card inside and I was using XPostFacto 2.2.2 to install OS X.

Sorry, but it looks like you've run into a problem with the 10.2.8 update. I'm in process of wipe/reinstall because of the same thing.
Try running disk utility. I've heard 10.2.6 is the last update that won't cause weird problems. Alternately, could you try to wipe/reload with 10.3?

10.3 won't work with anything under the B/W G3
Yes. XPOSTFACTO.
The problem is I can't do a wipe/reinstall because the drive has disappeared. Anyway of getting the system to reckonise it?

will not work on anything unless it has a G3 proc. NATIVELY. That means it will not work on his computer
I'm trying to remember the exact process - but if you boot the install CD, I seem to remember that the diskutility/repair program is available from the menus. You might be able to use it to repair the drive.
This really doesn't sound like an "update" problem it sounds like the drive has fried, but you might get lucky.
He does have a G3, it's an XLR8 upgrade card (read his post). You can use XPostFacto to install it on any supported PCI mac with a G3 processor. This includes the 7300-9600 series, therefore it should work. Unfortunatly, because of the way XPostFacto works, you cannot boot it without a HD to install onto. This is because (I think) It has the kernel and all the boot stuff stored on the HD but they all reference to the CD and it then boots from the CD. It works, I've successfully put 10.1.5 on my old 7500 with 604 card using it.
To get back on topic; I recommend Alsoft Diskwarrior. The site (google for it) says it can recover stuff nothing else can, so it may work, If you know someone who has a copy, you could try to get them to recover the HD for you. If it dosn't work, then it's likely that the drive is toast.:-( Sorry to say that.
