War Games

As some of you no doubt know, I have very recently installed NetBSD on three of my own personal Macintosh computers. Probably one of the first things I did, after configuring my NetBSD installations, was to check out the games directory.

I was somewhat intrigued by an application in the games directory called, War Games. Anybody that knows anything about me, will know precisely why this particular game captured my attention. Wink

Anyway, it turns out that War Games is not a game at all. In fact, the only way to win, is not to play. And this, as you might imagine, has me even more enamored with this not-quite-a-game game.

When you type the filename at the shell prompt, you are immediately greeted with that all too familiar phrase, "Shall we play a game?" As you can probably tell, you get a choice of two possible responses: Yes & No.

This is the part that floors me! It does not matter which answer you choose! You get the same response, regardless. The game responds with this, "The only winning move is not to play."

That's funny! Blum 3

The Movie?

There was a movie?

Just kidding! Yes, the acoustic coupler modem, the big 8" floppies, and tic tac toe. Yes, I have most certainly seen the movie.

Have you ever seen the television series, Northern Exposure? Do you know the guy that plays the astronaut on Northern Exposure? Well, I've often wondered how he went from being a General in War Games, to an astronaut in Alaska. Something just doesn't seem right!

Personally, I think it's corruption!

WarGames on NetBSD can be use

WarGames on NetBSD can be used as a game starter. You can type in the name of some of the other games in the same directory and it will run them.

EDIT:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarGames in the triva section.

Barry Corbin

Lil bit o' trivia:

Barry Corbin now resides in Arlington, Tx, and does voice spots for KPLX, 99.5 "The Wolf", a country station. If you know the voice, then you know it's perfect for a country station.

As an aside, I had a chance to talk to him a number of years ago after he broke his leg at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (you may remember his Northern Exposure character having a broken leg...) He couldn't have been a nicer guy if he tried.

Oops... aw, look at that... sorry... I just dropped a name... can you get that for me?

Name dropping? Heh, we could

Name dropping? Heh, we could play that game for days around here I bet, but it would need it's own thread. Man, I could get some stories going... For a time my mom was shuttled around Turkministan on their Presidents' personal bus... And a few more high-rank run-ins. Wink
