Entourage help needed

I've been trying to figure this out for months, but I don't always have the problem... so I forget to ask about it.

I use Entourage on OS X for my work, and I have an Exchange account.

Usually, when I launch Entourage, the client automatically connects to the server, and everything's fine.

Sometimes... like if I lose my internet connection and Entourage is running, when I get the connection back, Entourage refuses to connect back to the Exchange Server. Sometimes quiting and relaunching will solve this... at launch, if the connection is there, Entourage connects back to the server.

Sometimes... it just doesn't, even though I know there is an internet connection, or I'm even on the same LAN as the server.

Entourage has a "Work Offline" under the Entourage menu, but AFAIK... there is no button or menu task that forces Entourage to connect to the Exchange server. When Entourage doesn't connect to the server, next to my account, it just says (Not Connected), and it just sits there, sometimes fixing its connection, sometimes staying that way indefinately.

This is driving me nuts.
How do I force Entourage to connect to the friggin' Exchange server???!!!

Re: Entourage help needed

Hi , I'm an 9.2 user but if you go to "tools" and then "edit schedule" ( I dont know if this exists in the OSX version) , you can programm entourage to connect or not when you open the programm.

I hope will help.

thanks... but

I appreciate the attempt... but its not really working.
Yes, that menu is there, and its already set up that way.

I really need to know why M$ would have a function of "work offline" and no corresponding function of "go back online"

If it does... That's what I'm trying to find out.

At work ...

We use entourage as well with the token set of exchange servers. Let me be the first to say that Entourage is like an ill tempered cat - when it wants to cooperate, it will. Anyways, the most reliable way for me to get it to connect is by either quitting and relaunching the app or an insane move. Go into your account settings (write down your exchange server in stickies or somewhere) and add some gibberish to your server address. Save the setting, watch entourage do nothing or go nuts. Then go back into your account settings and reenter your server info.

Yes, entourage behaves like an ill tempered cat. Messing with the exchange server info will help you show it who's boss.

Exchange isn't like POP (or e

Exchange isn't like POP (or even IMAP, really), it's MAPI and very proprietary. There's constant communication going back and forth between the client and mail server; that's how new messages show up in the inbox of your client app immediately when you get them (instead of every 10 minutes or whenever the client polls the mail server for new messages). Exchange is a good mail system, but it's very temperamental, even with Windows clients. Entourage for Mac isn't a true Exchange client; it's basically Apple Mail with a tacked-on Exchange framework. Be thankful that all it takes to reconnect is just a relaunch of the app.

I see...

don't aggravate the microsofts... god forbid we all come to our senses and use something that works

Exchange is a good mail system

used to be, I think, during the very end of the last millenium, Now, it truely isn't.

Consider the hidden costs (and hairs pulled) of it not working right all the time. Then consider all the extra time it takes for security (security is necessary on any platform, but the cost of security on any M$ platform is, I think all will agree, much much more expensive when you consider how much time it demands). All those man-minutes lost, cumulatively, add up to man-years and man-decades of lost work and money just flushed away.

Currently, on our university listserv, we've got a recurring problem with the Exchange servers, that if you had and account, and no longer do (switched back to the conventional IMAP mail here), some of your mail goes missing... it (apparently) gets delivered to a non-existent exchange account. They've narrowed it down to an issue with Exchange (frankly, I've done my best to ignore problems everyone has with Exchange, so I'm not certain my description is even accurate).

Anyone seen what's coming in Leopard Server? the iCal server thingy looks very promising. Once calandering is solved, Exchange loses its edge.

Entourage actually uses a sick and twisted combination of IMAP and WebDAV rather then MAPI to talk to the Exchange server. (My guess is that no one outside the Exchange/Outlook development group at Microsoft actually understands MAPI well enough to write a MAPI client.) A few possibly helpful suggestions:

A: If your company uses an Exchange front-end server for Outlook Web Access/IMAP/etc and you're pointing your Entourage at it, you *might* try pointing it at whatever back-end Exchange server your mailbox store is on instead, if the network configuration allows it.

B: You might want to play with the NTLM authentication settings as detailed at the bottom of the page here. Some combinations of SSL/Front End/ Back End/whatever other Microsoft black magic just seem to work better then others.

Eudimorphodon, you know too much. How come you're always coming up with these really perceptive observations/suggestions? Its time you started trolling once in a while, don't you think? Do not unda-estimate the powa of the dock side!

I actually like outlook/exchange

I have to admit that I really like the integration in Outlook. Granted, the fact that it doesn't talk with my computer's address book is a pain (the data soup concept from the newton lives on). At work, I have a PC for some PC only apps that I support as well as my three macs. Since nobody with a vintage mac is using it for mail (machines running os 9 or earlier are typically being used with scientific equipment that hasn't been updated), I only run entourage on two of my Macs.

Entourage works nicely, though Outlook is better. For some fun, Cross Over, from codeweavers works great with Office 2003 on ICBM's (Intel Chip Based Macs). In fact Office 2003 for Windows under CrossOver runs better on an ICBM than Office 2004 for Mac does.

I've tried the troll thing. People *still* persist in coming under your bridge to ask questions, no matter how many goat bones you throw at them.

Gargoyle is better. Stupid questions tend to be lost in the excitement once you've flung the person asking off the building.

Projects and Tasks

Does anyone know if there is a way to share Entourage 2004 projects and assign tasks over a network. I would love to be able to use these tools with my employees but can't figure it out and it's driven me crazy.

Exchange

I can't believe I'm actually posting this link
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/overview/default.mspx

If I were in business, just from reputation alone, I'd wait until Leopard Server shows all its teeth before commiting to a neverending and near-unbreakable relationship with Microsoft and the usually unexplainable phenomena generated by Exchange Server, its services and its relationships to clients.

Can you please help with Entourage

Hello, I've been using Entourage 2004 for now a while and has never had much trouble with it.

Today, I received one of those mac- update your software advise. I did, this time was for Entourage.

Once I finished the update, It asked me if I wanted to change the keychain for all other applications. I said no, but it would not accept it. I would not let me move forward..so I press yes.

Now every time I try to open Entourage, after a few seconds i get the following message:
Entourage has encountered a problem and it needs to restart. I'm asked to send a report, I do and Entourage is restarted and the same problem goes on, an on, an on.

The only way I got entourage from restarting was by placing it work off-line.

Can you please help me understand what I can do. I have read all the blogs on entourage and nothing helps. I even tried doing another update on it but it would not allow me stating I don't have the software require for the update, which is not right.

Please help, SOMEONE!!!!
