fun with PCI risers

as usual I'm sitting around playing with stuff, and I notice the PCI risers I got with a pair of 5500 LBs are kinda similar to the commslot II connector, only just a little longer. Hmm, maybe a PCI riser could be used to lay a CS2 card over on its side. Why? Because I want a CS2 nic in my PowerCC and the only nics I've got are those too-tall Apple jobbies. I figured if only I could lay the nic over . . . anyway . . .

So I whack the back end off the CS2 slot (just cut the slot right on through) and sure enough it looks like it'd work just grand. These PCI risers are just a straight passthrough so I can't see why they wouldn't work. Err, well except for one thing, the riser lays the nic out over the edge, instead of toward the middle of the LB. Not too swift there Dan. Blum 3

Well the ol' fevered brain thinks of the old Gossamer Perch card and whaddya know, if one were to chop up a pair of risers one could make one perch card 90 degree adapter out of the rubble. Very interesting . . .

The biggest problem seems to be that the Apple PCI risers are too low, but higher risers might work better. I'll be prowling eBay for such things, they're out there, just gotta find 'em.

On a related question, is the Perch card's modem slot strictly for a modem? Or has anyone ever gotten a CS2 nic to work in there? IIRC, it was modem-only, but I figured I'd ask. I was playing with a CS2 nic on one of the risers attached to the Perch card, seemed like an interesting combination if it would work.

All these cards use the same pin spacing and thickness BTW.

I did take some pics, but I'm too foofed to do anything with them right now.

a source

other than eBay:

I'm sure there are plenty of other similar vendors out there.

Looking through the above outfit's catalog, I see reverse risers (flop the opposite direction), so maybe my idea for flopping the CS2 card over might actually pan out. I think they may even have extenders, which would be handy for getting the CS2 card up above an installed PCI card (in its riser of course.)

The above outfit says they are the manufactor, I wonder how hard/expensive it would be to have custom riser adapters made up, say in lots of a hundred or two? Hey, maybe even a mez->PCI adapter for iMac . . . sheesh, there I go again! Blum 3
