Home Sharing iTunes - aka: more about Apple's vendetta against me...

Been through the articles and the Help stuff for Home Sharing already. Got my account shared from my laptop and on my iPhone. Bothe devices are connected to the same local WiFi network in my home.

Laptop is running iTunes 9.1.1(12). iPhone is running iOS 4.3.3.

I cannot see my laptop's share on the iPhone and have no content in the native library of the iPhone at this time.

Am I right about Apple and this is a version issue or did I really miss some simple step?

TIA

IIRC you need to be running at least iTunes 10 for the full functionality -- that is, the ability to stream music from a Mac/PC to an iOS device -- of Home Sharing to be available. Any particular reason you're still using iTunes 9?

'cuz my laptop is an iBook (PPC) and cannot go above X.4.11, which peaks out at iTunes 9.

Upgrading the laptop is not in the budget for at least another 18 months...

Was hoping to share iTunes libraries over the WiFi network. I have the options showing in iTunes 9, but the iPhone cannot see it. I have no other device to see if it is the laptop and its ability to share or the iPhone and its ability to see the share. Not sure how to trouble shoot this in the blind...

Well, as I suspected, you need at least iTunes 10.2 to be able to share to iOS devices:

You should be able to share between computers running iTunes, though.

Also, make sure you've not got some sort of device isolation set up on your wifi; some older routers just do this and have no options to change it. Basically, it means that wifi devices can't see each other. It's *very* annoying, and I've replaced a few routers due to this before.

The best way to check if this is a problem is to plug your mac in by ethernet, or test with an ad-hoc network.

ah, this explains much and confirms Apple's shear loathing of me and my efforts to maximize 'dated' hardware.

before anyone slams me, I would like to point out the following:
my Rev A iMac - died (flyback transformer failed)
my Rev A iBook - died (yo-yo adapter shorted out one day, releasing all magic smoke from the mobo)
my MDD G4 - died (PSU failure finally confirmed as the problem)
my iBook G4 - still okay for now (holding my breath as I type) but does not play nice with my new iPhone
my iPhone 4 - can't synch it to anything I can afford to buy/own at this time... (I can send vCards back and forth to my laptop, so that helps keep contacts synched up and iFiles lets me manage the photos as well, but no loading tunes.....)
my 500MHz PM 8600 (aka Connie) - still going strong although I do need to rebuild (clean install) the main OS drive due to new hardware and changed software needs. A/V ports work great in my entertainment system.
my Newton 2100 - never let me down after all these years and is compatible with my iTunes 2 on Connie!
my Newton 100 - runs like a champ after I rebuilt the battery pack

my efforts to keep up with the Apple power curve on hardware due to software progression since the second coming of Jobs have always left me falling back to my ever-reliable first coming of Jobs systems when the new stuff ultimately dies on me.

...just saying....

Can you scrape $350 together somehow? That's how much Intel Mac minis or early MacBooks are going for on eBay, and will solve all your problems.

Have you tried syncing everything with gmail or something else which provides exchange syncing? I'm pretty sure that can do contact sync.
