Re: THIS is Laughable!

It *is* authentic Apple 2 material. Influenced by Steve Jobs. It is old. It has original packing and boxes. Comes with the hard-to-fine manuals. And enough hardware to get you up and running. It is genuine Apple Co. hardware. With a real history behind it. Definitely rare and antique status. You'll never ever ever see another configuration exactly like this one.

HOW CHEAP do you want it ??

C'mon Keatah.
The guy is asking an outrageous price for an "As Is" computer that he says is new.

$999.00 staring price?
There is not one of those boxes that is sealed.
The guy says it himself in the description that it was set up and used and then put away.

If he would have said $350.00 to $500.00, I would say maybe.

But you're right. I'm cheap. Smile

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven,
there could be a lot discussed on price and what prices can be called "fair" and where "outragious" starts.....
nobody realy can expect such device to be "new and unused" except still in sealed original package....
to tell truth ... value is today not judged to be new or unused.... in fact the better choice will be "mint" condition.... meaning that there is not a single damage or signs of use or "normal" age.... ( and even thats difficult to certify, because in the meantime several methods of bleaching are used.....
at least among collectors the use of the term "mint condition" is more reliable....
and among the thousends of Apple IIe models ( and i´ve seen a lot of them ) only very few could have been called
to be in "mint condition".... and if a item fullfills that criteria - at least among some collectors - this expands
the value far beyond normal price.....

if that can allready be called "outragious" is another discussion.....
finally the market determines the price.... i´ve seen several far more rare items in mint condition, that have been sold for far less .... so in some cases it´s just gambling.... also gambling with time..... it´s normal that 4 weeks to 2 weeks before Christmas and Eastern prices get higher than normal.... that´s also some kind of "gift-mania" that takes influence in the market and quite a lot sellers try to profit from that maniac-decease...

where it realy gets outragious is if somebody tries to sell a "ultra rare -steve woziniak designed - printercard for 250 bucks or more and it gets the lol if it´s in poor condition without cable, manual and some chips missing on the interface.... that´s the point where we start asking: " is that guy kiding?"

It got lost because you stopped before amping it all the way to: unlike other Apple IIe systems installed in bakeries, this one was NEVER exposed to flour or sugar, which makes it EXTREMELY RARE among bakery Apple II systems! In fact, there is NO OTHER Apple system currently on Ebay that was bought for a BAKERY and NEVER USED!

Speaking of sarcasm...

Epoxy said a Bakery, what about a Butcher Shop?

"Taken from the box brand new, splattered with chicken guts, wiped off and placed back into the box without even trying to start it."

Oh. There could be many situations and scenarios for this. lol

Hello Steven,
why not ? just toss away the two zero´s and shift the dot 2 positions left, drop the coma and the offer would be O.K. .... it´s for sure just a typing mistake.... we probably just have to mail that to "good old2 erics auctions...

Wow! Looks like the bakery Apple IIe sold for $1499. For that, it better bake some delicious apples.
Maybe this thread should be subtitled "Laughable...then stunned silence."

That just confirms my explenations about "mint condition" above.....
... but probably it was only a lady with to high limit on the credit card hunting for the eastergift for her "housefriend" ( and probably a collector )
- question is just now: how to get that stuff in the damn egg
and the entire thing wrapped in giftpaper -
and last not least : where does she want to hide that egg ?

You know guys.. I'd always recommend hanging on to your Apple II paraphernalia as much as possible. Prices on these things aren't going to go down. And they're not going to all-of-a-sudden become plentiful. And soon enough, equipment without original packing material will rise in price. So just keep things in nice condition and enjoy the hobby.

I've had great (some would say beyond laughable) offers for a lot of my hardware. And other items, that I thought were worth something turned out to be $5 and $10 stocking stuffers. Just shows one can never know what something will move for.

But being enthusiasts

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Ok Keatah,

I know exactly where you are coming from and I cannot disagree.

My big thing is that some one get's ahold of a late model IIe at a flea market for a couple of bucks, then thinks they can turn around and sell it on ebay saying "Mint Condition/Never ben used" and charge anywhere up to and higher than $5,000.00. They know next to nothing about Apple II's in general and most never even research what they have.
They are trying to make a "quick buck" off of some poor schmuck who wants to get into retro-computing and does not know any better.

I'm sorry...
I'll get off my orange crate and stop preaching now. Smile

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Guys,

Here's a thing I ran into a few months back which now makes me take the "sold" items in the eBay completed listings with a huge grain of salt. So here's the story in a nutshell.

I saw an Apple IIe, green Monitor, Duo Disk, and Star 10 Gemini Printer for $350.00 starting bid. The other kicker was it was local so I knew I could bid a little higher on it if the person let me pick it up personally. It also had a "make offer" on it too. There was nothing spectacular about it, it was just a run of the mill IIe for my collection. I made an offer of $60.00 and the guy came back all huffy and said he could part it out for more than that and he was insulted with my offer.

Well, a year later when it was still on eBay he started the bidding at $40.00 so I bid on it. The max bid I put on it was my original $60.00. At the last minute the bidding shot up $75.00, $90, and the $150.00 from all different bidders. So I was amazed that he got $150.00 for it and sent him a message congratulating him and saying I was wrong. I promptly got an email back asking what I bid on it. I said $60.00. He said to come pick it up and that he wants rid of it.

Long story short is that I assumed he had his friends bid on it to try to drive the price up and it backfired on him. I don't think that three bidders would have stiffed him and not paid.

So the moral of the story is that let's see if the Bakery Apple IIe really sold for $1400.00 or is someone trying to drive the price up. The moral of this story is that if you are using the "green" prices in the completed listings on eBay to gauge worth of you vintage apple II gear, be careful and throw out the very high prices.

For example, if you see a bunch of Apple IIe systems go for between $40 and $70 and then you see a similar one go for $4,000.00, there may be games afoot. Smile

Re: THIS is Laughable!

jay,

I have seen this often enough.
I will place an item on my "Watch List".
Then when there are two or three bidders, I will hit the little blue "Bids" link.
I click on each one of the bidders names to see how many Bid Retractions they have.
If they have more than three in the past six months (according to eBay Rules)I contact the seller and let him/her know about it. The seller has the capability of not only removing these bidders, but he can block them from any of his/her auctions from that point on.

Normally, if the seller is legit, he/she will remove those bidders and block them.
If the seller does not and I see that one of these "Shills" is going to win, I don't bid.
Most times I will not go back to that seller because if he/she is allowing this to happen, then they have no respect for you, nor themselves.

They would probably try to sell thier own mother.

Another "Soapbox" issue. Smile

It's rare and has all the manuals plus the original box. I doesn't look like it's ever been used. It wouldn't shock me if he sells it for $200.

Just so you know...

The Appletalk Card is being sold by one of our fellow Fritters.

If it were not for the fact that I do not have a use for it, I would buy it.

On to other items:

I swear...

I admit the LocalTalk card is nice, but I do think the price is a bit on the high side since it is a LocalTalk card. You hit the nail right on the head when you said, "If it were not for the fact that I do not have a use for it, I would buy it."

More power to him and if he gets it all the better.

I tried a few times on FleaBay to get $250.00 for an LCII, with Apple IIe card, y-cable, 5.25" Disk Drive, Manual, and Diskettes. I even set it up so that IIe booted from a hard drive partition and put all kinds of cool Apple II and Mac software on it. Got a lot of watchers, but no takers for $250.00.

OK I take if back about this seller...

What ever formula of drugs he is on, I need some to distort my view of reality...

"Apple-1 manual professionally reprinted"

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=190821017911&globalID=EBAY-US

I gave these exact things out at VCF east last year for NOTHING!!!
My 12 year old son made them, we printed them on my HP2840 office printer and used my comb/binding machine. Couldn't have cost me more than 25 cents a copy to "professionally reprint" them.

I thought it was nuts when someone after the show sold theirs on eBay for $10 (what it must have cost me to make 40), but $50 for a single one!!!!

Drugs... Need more drugs.....

the better reaction to kill such offers would be to offer them by yourself for less - for example for 25 bucks....
that kills the other offer and then ( in case some are really sold....) - well then you can buy some legal drugs -
for example some good bottles of wine....
that might lift your disappointments...
and it surely may give you better felling by kicking off that guy from his greed...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Okay. Here is one I don't really understand at all. This guy is selling a few IIes for $100-$175.00. The one for $100 is described as "Has moderate to severe damage with missing 4 key but powers on." Way too much money for these. However, other items in his store seem to be reasonably priced.

Just because it is an Apple IIe that is beat to hell and back I can ask $100.00, plus shipping, but a lot of 16 30GB IDE Laptop hard drives for $13.00. I don't get it.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-IIe-Vintage-Home-Computer-Missing-Keys-A2S2128-/111046610084?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item19dae4cca4

I have a dozen of these IIes that are in great shape, the 4 key is not missing and it powers on. I guess I can get $200.00 ea for them.

Maybe more if I professionally print out the Apple IIe manual and include that. LOL! LOL!

THanks,

Jay,

To be absolutely fair, he does have a Best Offer box sitting there.
Although, I am not sure what I would offer as the front right corner of the case is gone completely. Maybe $1.00? It may be worth that in internal parts because it sure ain't worth $100.00!

Apple II Rev0 goes for US $5,766.66

This my friends, is not laughable.

This means that the ante has been raised on all of us who wish to buy an Original II (any revision) in the near future.

This also means that nere-do-well sellers will expect the same sort of prices for a IIPlus, or IIe.

A sad day for all. Sad

Re: THIS is Laughable!

So the question is "Why do you have 25 IIe and 2 II Plus computers?"

When I decided to get back into the II, I set myself up with two systems, one as a fallback in case of problems with the primary. Seems adequate. Of course I suppose a true collector might want every variant machine, but I'm pretty sure there weren't 25 different varieties of IIe...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven,
surely it is a sad day - at least for those who are searching for such a working system. But in fact-
we also should keep a realistic view what really happened: this high price was not just a lucky hit!
It´s the thing closest you can get from the very early days of apple history - if you can´t disburse a quarter million for an apple 1.
As explained in earlier postings - the price of items between collectors are given by several factors:
amount of produced items
amount of this items left availiable in the market
and age relative to total time of life of such items.....
so now just compare and answer this questions by yourself:
how many years have Apple II series ( rev.0 to rev. 7 ) been manufactured ?
how many of them have been out of rev. 0 only ?
how many of them are still availiable and in the market ?
among the few items - how many of them with such low serial number do exist ?
comparing this with the amount of Apple II+ -systems that have been made
and how many of them are still availiable ( and i even don´t add those
european versions of the europlus ) i don´t believe such systems to rise that high....
and comparing the numbers with the amount of IIe´s that have been manufactured and the amount of that kind
of models still availiable is surely rediculous....
we are watching here the price development of very few thousend manufactured computers from rev.0 with only several hundreds of remaining models in the market....
The only thing that bothers me is the fact that there are enough crazy guys out there with a rev.4 or rev.7 model or just even a II+ that are too stupid to recognize this kind of differences and that will start a rush to ebay expecting that their items from massproduction will crush the limits of bids at the top of the universe and set starting price "far above limits".......
here in Germany there is a guy who sets now for more than half a year a RAMcard for IIGS for an amount far beyond 180 U.S. Dollars ( he started at 250 bucks half year ago ) and every month that offer drops by about 10 bucks....
so probably he might become lucky to sell his card at the end of this year......... or the mid of next year...

but it´s now for sure that this thread won´t need to be shut down....

because of those nuts running around without detail knowledge about history and avarage market
- but still believing that god has selected them ( with a tip of his finger on their left shoulder ? ) for a bucket of luck and gold ( instead of stupidness ? ) and a "trashy" item and expectation that they have hit the goldmine....

we should just remember how many guys did really make a hit in the years of 1860´s and how many starved with a bucket of "fools gold"...

this thread will surely see a lot of offers at ebay from other universes in the next months....

beam me up Scotty...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hmmmm,

Well they only made about 6000 Rev 0. So the one that just sold is an average serial number, low would be in the 100 or less range...

The big question is of the 6000, how many still exist and more importantly how many still have the original motherboard. Not many I would guess. Most people who systems died, got motherboard replacements. Simple as that, no one cared back then if their machine was "matching" they just wanted it working.

I was lucky, my Rev 0, must have been bought by someone who had a clue about electronics. Every 74LS257DC has been replaced with 74LS257 with date codes in the early 80's and so have all the bus drivers. Cost me about $100 bucks to track down all the NOS to get the date codes so I can be correct.

The good thing about a sale like this past one is that sometimes it brings good stuff out of the closet for sale, the bad thing is that it also brings a lot of junk. And everyone wants top dollar for it regardless.

The days of the rare "cheap" Apple find may be over my friends... and when the working IIe stock on eBay dwindles down, they too will go up in price.

Cheers,
Corey

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I nominate this eBay Auction, because I "very nicely" asked the Seller to provide Pictures of the Case Serial Number, Board Serial Number/Date Number, Power Supply Serial Number and any additional components contained within the Computer...

"On Apr-20-13 at 15:02:50 PDT, seller added the following information:"
"The model is number AA11040B"

I figure that the Seller either doesn't know what a Serial Number is, or doesn't really understand English very well, or hopes what no one notices there might be nothing special about this computer..

Any one else want to "attempt to" gather additional information about this computer??

The response was a little funny, yeah. But price itself hasn't gotten laughable yet ($130 or so at the moment w/ shipping). The interesting thing about it is the box, which is there to see. Perhaps not revealing more does hurt the seller, cause who knows, maybe the buyer will luck out with some exotic card!

Here's one that is on the border of being Laughable, but it is not quite there.

It is a Liron Card with the cable ripped from it.

It has been there for a while. If it had the cable attached, I would scoop it up in a minute.

I did offer around $50 or $60 a few months back since I can solder.

$151.00 is just too much to take a chance on with the cable ripped from it. Not to mention it looks like the header is shot.

Oh well, I will keep watching it and see if it comes down in price.

Hopefully, this is nobody on this list. If it is, send the card to me and for a fee, I will solder a 19 pin cable and connector on it for you. Smile

Thanks,
Jay

That is shadow. The same parts of the shadow are on the plastic bag, but the bag doesn't show it much, and it also diffuses it. But definitely shadow. I could do a forensic analysis if you like?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Jay,

I sent the seller an e-mail and told him it was damaged, but he would not lower his price.
I had thought about bidding on it if he did, but I have several LIRONs here and really don't need another one. Smile

Now. If you really want to see something laughable, look for the $1,000.00 Disk IIc.

It's cool but it's 6 times what I would pay.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

More than 6x what I would pay or has been paid for the same thing.

The last one I recall in a box was a buy it now for about $75 and it sat there for a while, By the time I decided to grab it someone bought it maybe an hour before. No box or manual, but I paid $30 for mine on eBay recently. All I had to do was reseat the chips.

Cheers,
Corey

Transwarp,

Yep! BoxLots has a couple of items that are priced out into the Delta Quadrant.

That mark on the boxed Apple II Plus-- it is a part of the photographer's shadow. Perhaps his elbow. Compare with shadow on first photo.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I have seen a few laughable items lately, but this one takes the cake, icing, and the platter it came on:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-NOS-APPLE-iic-Disk-iic-Disk-Drive-Model-A2M4050-RARE-100-Unopened-/200925727976?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec81b4ce8#ht_113wt_669

This seller is out in Illinois and must be absolutely mad if he thinks someone is going to pay $1,000.00 for a Disk IIc.

It would have to be made out of Gold and Platinum. LOL

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven;
please correct me, but if i remember correct the seller has delivered several auctions that became topic in this thread.... and it´s not the first time, that he placed offers at prices from the planet $$$cash$$$. He must have read in
his youth too many comics about Dagobert Duck....
- just another guy that believes to become dealing some day with "big money" and with only few knowledge to the topic....
seems more and more that such guys think about "the good old days of the goldrush" turning back when reading Apple on some obsolete part....
I´m waiting for the first guy to issue offer of:

500 bucks for
"Original antique Apple serial cable for connecting the Apple Laser Writer with old Apple Computers ...
!!!!!!!extreme rare !!!!!
the cable comes along with original documentation and original bill from 1981"....

probably such offer will come up sooner than we expect....
...Dorothy we´re no more in Kansas....
sincerely speedyG

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I have no clue why ANYONE would pay $10k for Sculley's signature, let alone on a Green Screen Monitor.

But...it takes all kinds.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

It would be kinda cool to have that signed ProDos disk that comes with it, you know just to frame it or something. But I wouldn't spend more than $30 on it, and that would be for a nice piece. His is kinda grungy.
