Re: Briel Replica 1 Tenth Anniversary announced

This reminds me. I never finished documenting the use of an extra max232 as a voltage pump/inverter on the proto area to allow the use of a 9V wall wart to use either a Briel or Willegal cassette adapter with a lot more reliability than the simple ground wire to the ACI's -12v. When I did my original "hack" using the onboard max 232 the ACI drew too much current to use at the same time with the serial port voltage levels dropped too much. Maybe I'll have a chance in the next few weeks to setup my Briel and take some pics. Right now my spare video monitor died so that would have to wait as I can't tear apart any of my other systems to do it. I'm too busy at work and must get my scelbi finished and fully working before the end of the year so it will be ready for VCF east.

I wonder how the change in the 10th anniversary Replica-1 to usb power and communication would affect that hack...

Cheers,
Corey

Alas, I waited too long to decide to purchase one and now they are sold out. Any word on another run of boards? I understand the next run will have the green boards and not the red.

I have no idea why anyone would want to do business with Briel Computers. It really does puzzle me.

I know it's up to the individual, but I would never pay full price up front only to have the manufacturer wait until all items in a run are bought and paid for before even beginning the manufacturing.

I know people that have paid hundreds of dollars to Briel Computers and had to wait months and months and months before receiving anything. What??!!!

Hey, whatever turns your crank. Personally, I like sellers that have the hutzpah to put their money in and actually have a product to sell before asking me to fork over my funds. I really don't think that's too much to ask.

It's common practice for small-run 'garage' manufacturers and hobbyists to request payment up front. As an admin on another board pointed out, 90% of the people who say they'll buy an item in an 'interest' thread never do. I don't know Vince's situation, but most of these people have other jobs, families, mortgages, etc. and can't afford the risk investment of thousands of dollars up front with no guarantee of return.

It's substantially cheaper for a small-run manufacturer to purchase all items for a run at once. Volume purchasing. Do you want to wait, or would you prefer paying a lot more?

I paid for a ROM board for one of my Ataris back in September, and haven't received it yet. But the guy doing the boards has an excellent reputation - and an expanding family - and he's building the boards in his spare time after dinner. I'm content waiting.

But I can understand that isn't for everyone. It requires a bit more research and trust than buying from a big-box store, but in return you have available items for our vintage hobby that would not otherwise see the light of day. As you said, whatever turns your crank.

BillO you are the very first person I have ever heard complain about Briel Computers practices in almost 15 years.

There are many folks here who have bought his finished boards and board kits over the years. Most of them waited
for a new batch to arrive with no complaints.

Maybe, just maybe, you should go to Kansasfest this year and meet him.

Just my two cents,

Steven

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I just don't understand the practice and would never be a customer.

Maybe, but I too provide small-run electronics (Microcontroller oriented) and sell them on-line (on eBay and through my own site via PayPal shopping basket) as well as keep down a full time position. However, if you order from me, it will be shipped within 3 days. It's mostly way sooner, but sometimes I have to spend a day or two in another NA city (crakin' the whip!) I would never offer for sale anything I did not have to sell. What if I got sick? Or if I had to go away for an extended time? Or I got hit by a bus? No, if I can't deliver a product right away, I don't sell it. If it's on my website or on eBay, its in stock.

Vince might be the nicest guy in the world, but we just don't share the same business philosophy.

Perhaps it was not a good idea to make my comment in the first place. Sorry for that and did not mean to offend.
