Apple iigs disks

Can someone tell me what disks originally shipped with the Apple iigs? The manual mentions a "training disk". No operating system...?

Hello insanitor,

IIGS ROM 0 = GSOS System 6.0.1 ( 5 disks 3 1/2 " Disks Set )
IIGS ROM 1 = GSOS System 6.0.1 ( 5 disks 3 1/2 " Disks Set )
IIGS ROM 3 = GSOS System 6.0.2 ( 5 disks 3 1/2 " Disks Set )

sincerely

Hello to All

Due to hardware and firmware changes, the ROM 0 is not compatible with the latest GS/OS versions.
Comparing the IIGS timeline and the GS/OS timeline :
- ROM 0 : GS/OS 2.0
- ROM 01 : from GS/OS 3.1 to GS/OS 5.0
- ROM 03 : from GS/OS 5.0 to GS/OS 6.0.1

Hello,

I just started up my GS ROM 1 with a MicroDrive IDE Controller with GS/OS 6.01.

FYI.

I am 100% positive that when the GS was shipped originally, no Microdrive Controller was included.

I am sorry, I have to apologize for my bad English.

I understood the post of aumagent in the way that the ROM1 is not able to run 6.01.

Sorry for that.

Georg, please do not apologize. Not only is your English far easier to understand than some (supposedly) English speaking people, I thought exactly what you did.

When Amauget posted the range of operating systems I too initially thought that was from lowest to highest system level able to be utilized by the various ROM versions.

Your post made perfect sense and was not out of place. The delivery system being newer or older does not negate the fact that the ROM version can run the system.

The sarcasm about your posting and "needing to be heard" etc. is typical of the person who posted those comments.

And people wonder why it's been so quiet here? Shall we count how many people have been lambasted by speedy after their first post let alone subsequent posts?

Sorry, but for all the great info posted there is more condescension and vitriol posted.

Too bad we can't all be as knowledgeable as speedy. Were it not for that extensive knowledge and the willingness to make it available (which I have thanked him for repeatedly) there would literally be nothing but sarcasm and degrading posts to read.

PS I'm sure the retaliations in defense of speedy will come fast and furiously due to his longstanding tenure on this site vs. my relative "newcomer" status. So be it. I not only call it like I see it but have personally been on the receiving end of a speedy "soap box rant"

I don't back down, I also don't stand up for myself or others unless it is warranted. At least I don't attack without provocation and spew insults at others because they asked a question instead of doing a thorough enough search to satisfy speedy's apparently delicate nerves.

A positive atmosphere for newcomers this site is NOT many times. We've all seen the same threads of which I speak. Sometimes it feels like "Spaceballs" in here. "I said fire across her nose, not UP IT!"

Perhaps a few less pot shots and a little more gentle suggestion speedy? Sorry if you are tired of repeating yourself.

That "chirp chirp chirp" thread is making a whole lot more sense now after this thread.

Damn, now I'm attacking. Sorry to all for lowering myself to this level, I should have known better.

No. ROM0 is not able to run GSOS 6. (I don't know about 5.) ROM01 can run any version.

Re: Apple iigs disks

Hello to all,

The original question was "what disks originally shipped with the Apple iigs ?".
In my answer, I did not say the ROM 01 won't boot the GS/OS 6.01 at all. I'm just trying to answer the question.

ROM 01 and ROM 3 are both able to run GS/OS 6.01.
ROM 0 isn't able to run GS/OS 4.0 and later (as stated here).
More informations on the ROM differences can be found here : ROM 01 requires GS/0S 2.0 or later while ROM 3 requires GS/0S 5.0 and later.

Re: Apple iigs disks

It was difficult for me to find the "Training Disk" mentioned in the manual because the program refers to itself as, "Your Tour At The Apple II GS".

Re: Apple iigs disks

Thanks for the info. It seems that the two versions are referred to by the year in which they were produced. The 1986 version (or the "old version") and the 1988 version. So, I am assuming that the ROM01 iigs came with the 1986 version and the ROM03 iigs came with the 1988 version.
