Apple ii silver power supplies

I have many apple computers left from 16 school computer labs I once owned.
During that time I swapped parts and am trying to put the 50 + computers I own back to there original parts.
I have a few apple iie computers with silver power supplies. Are these supplies supposed to be in one of my apple ii or apple ii plus computers?

Re: Apple ii silver power supplies

Shouldn't hurt, as these supplies provide at least as much current output as the original Apple II / II plus supply.
If you're looking for "original", the difference would be more cosmetic than function.

Hello Sheryl Bryan,

without detailed description of the problems i can only refer to general handling.
I have accompanied online quite a bunch of resurections of various Apple II computers....
within that bunch of different threads are also quite a bunh of hints related to diagnostics of mistakes and
the approach narrowing down problems to the center of malfunction
so maybe reviewing that threads will offer a bunch of information, how to identify problems in that computers
and how to solve that kind of problems.... the threads will be found by trace of my profile at:
http://www.applefritter.com/user/49314/track
picking out of the list the threads related to Apple II repair postings or
by search with the search function at the right top of the page and use of specific keywords...

another recommendation for systematic diagnosis and solution of the problems would be to download
the book from Gene Williams.... it has also a very simple stratregy of locating problems and displays then a kind of "work list" to troubleshoot the problems.
The link to the book is:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/Apple%20II%20Documentation%20Project/Books/
and the first link to download would be:
Chilton - How To repair and maintain your Apple Computer.pdf
and the second link would be:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/ftp.apple.asimov.net/documentation/hardware/machines/How%20to%20Repair%20and%20Maintain%20Your%20Apple%20Computer%20%28Gene%20Williams%29.pdf
saving that 2 books to the harddisk and consulting that books will be great help to
solve in most cases the problems you may face while checking out the function of that units.

sincerely
speedyG

Re: Apple ii silver power supplies

Thank you,
The supplies are all good working supplies. I am just wondering if they were originally in my Apple ii computers or my Apple Plus Computers.
I have 3 apple ii and wish to get the original parts into the computers.
The computers have been in my attic for 10 years. I have boxes of motherboards, power supplies, keyboards. I know I have Three Apple ii motherboards with the 16k blocks. I want them back to original parts.
I have a large supply of chips that I kept and will be looking for the original Rom chips as well.
It makes me a bit ill when I realize how many of these computers and boards I threw in the trash.

Apple IIs started out with silver power supplies, then they moved to gold, then back to silver (more of a brushed aluminum finish). You can tell the difference by the switches on the back. If you snap a picture of the silver's switch (whole back panel, really), we will be able to tell which era it's from.

The 2 that I am looking at in the ii e say Aztec components ltd. with a backwards RU.
I'm going to go up to the attic and check on the other silver - aluminum power supplies and get back to you.
Thanks

Re: Apple ii silver power supplies

I have 18 power supplies for the Apple ii in my attic.
The other one I find has a little schematic of the output.
Are the supplies with the small label on top older than the ones with the longer label?
Thanks again

Re: Apple ii silver power supplies

Once owned 16 computer labs average 25 computers each.
Sold some, gave away others, must have thrown away about 20 computers.
Little did I know.

Hard to tell. Astec is a very typical manufacturer of Apple power supplies, but there were others. The generations of power supplies I've seen roughly goes like this:

Silver aluminum with toggle switch (rev 0, very early)
Silver aluminum with small, approximately square rocker switch (early revs of II, II+)
Gold aluminum with broad, rectangular rocker switch (some later II, run of the mill II+, early IIe)
Brushed silver aluminum with more square-ish rocker switch. (IIe)

So it would really help to get some more pictorial detail about what you have...

Hey Cheryl,
If you have an old original Apple II -power supply or not- that you're ready to sell, let me know.
I have seven Apple II plus models but haven't yet been able to get an older Apple II without
taking out a 2nd mortgage or contributing an arm/leg. Smile

Re: Apple ii silver power supplies

If you have a very early rev-0 silver supply that uses a toggle switch with red silk screened logo (no sticker). It's worth $$$, before you do anything with it post a picture here. It may be needed by someone to complete an early Rev-0. Make sure they provide proof of the early serial number (sub 500) if you do want to part with it. If you have a silver power supply for early Rev's of the II and II plus with the small plastic power switch with a serial number anywhere between 2500 and 3000, I'd be interested for a system I have with a mismatched silver supply (my PS serial # is over 10,000).

As you can tell, I'm all about getting the machines back to an "original" condition....

Cheers,
Corey
