will 1.2 floppy disks work in the disk drive of my CC?

Can I format some 1.2 floppys inside of my CC floppy drive so they will work in my CC? Or do I neeed to buy some older, smaller floppys?

I think they made 800kb and another size years ago. Can someone point me to a source, or can I re format my 1.2 floopys?

Thanks

I'm guessing you're in Japan? I vaguely recall that there's a standard high-density disk format there that uses the same media as 1.44MB floppies, spinning them at 360RPM instead of 300... and if that's the case then yes, those floppies should work just fine in the CC's "SuperDrive" after reformatting them.

Sorry - I am in Portland Oregon.

Let me ask my question another way. What size will the floopies be that are formatted with the stock floppy super drive in the CC?

Thanks

jack the new kid.

Okay... so, yeah, a CC has a drive capable of reading, writing, and formatting normal dirt-common high-density "HD" 3.5 floppy disks; the physical format (18 sectors per track, 80 tracks, two sides) is the same as standard PC floppy drive so you don't need to worry yourself in the slightest about all the data transfer hoops you have to jump through for Macs equipped with the earlier "800k" double density drives. (Which includes only the 128k, 512k(e), Plus, and early SEs.) Simple tools like DD and imagedisk can be used to make you a boot disk if you need one, and you can reformat these disks just fine on your running CC.

If you *did* have a machine with an 800k-only drive you can *sort* of get away with using the HD media, although it's not going to be reliable as the proper media (IE, the data may fade over time) and you may need to bulk-erase an already used disk to get it to format. I use HD media myself for toying with my 512k and Apple IIgs but there's certainly no "mission-critical" data being stored and I fully expect I'll have to recreate these disks on a regular basis. Also, if you're going to do this put a piece of opaque tape over the density-select hole; I discovered the hard way that the original 400k disk drive at least has an optical sensor to detect if a disk is present that shines right through that hole if you don't cover it up, leaving you with a disk that doesn't want to eject.

Thank you Eudimorphodon for cleaning this up for me.

I am moving to another country soon, and I am taking very little with me. My CC will be my only Apple product Sad

My IIfx and my Mac Pro have left to live with friends.

Can I run any software on a PC that will let me format the floppies for my CC? Or can I take a Dos/FAT 32 formatted floppy and stick it in my CC and will it re format it for my CC?

Thanks

jack
