I've looked at a lot of ROM 3 boards and I don't think I've ever noticed this before. Were updated ROMs available?

Re: Unusual IIgs ROMs

Hello Bill,
looks to me rather more like a "homebrew" replacement of the formerly damaged official ROM.
Label does not use official Apple typeset of chars...
is rather more a homebrew label.....
so the ROM Number is the very official number used ....
i´ve got 2 ROM 3 IIGS with that numbering...but the official ROMs look like the one below...

Nothing unusual. I've got some with one or both ROMs using EPROMs. My guess is that they ran short of the regular ones and used EPROMs to keep the production line moving.

Re: Unusual IIgs ROMs

It looks like a later revision than my other ROM 3 units, but perhaps they just used a different part number for the EEPROM part. I was pretty sure that I would have heard of a ROM upgrade by now, but you never know...

Looking at the picture you can see 2 machine pins added to each side of the socket. It appears to me to be a modern addition to allow the use of EPROMs

This is a factory engineering fix to accommodate the larger IC.

It was said that this was prototype ROM that would never get marketed.
But sure enough, it's not rare. Sometimes, a IIGS pops up on eBay with this ROM sticker.

For the record, here is an closeup image of a prototype ROM3 IIGS
