Apple 1 for sale

There is another Apple 1 for sale at Bonham's on December 5. Corey rated this one at a 7.

Here is a link:

There is also a sale offer letter, hand written by Jobs along with photos of a prototype unit. $75 for a bare board. What a deal!

Why only a 7?

Looks quite nice from my limited view.

I dout it came with those beautiful RAM chips though. (though period correct)

Wish I had an extra quarter mil I could toss around...

It's cool, but there are a lot of other things I'd drop 1/4 mill on if I had it.  Oh, to have enough that 1/4 million was like a quarter dollar.  But it would probably spoil me.

This one doesn’t appear to be

This one doesn’t appear to be on the registry, unless I’m missing something.

The seller actually owns two

The seller actually owns two Byte Shop Apple-1's: the one being auctioned is marked "01-0044" and another one that he intends to give to charity marked "01-0049". Neither of these are on the registry, and both have been made operational from what I understand. Both were traded in by their original owners for an Apple II, and then given to the present owner by Steve Jobs as a gift.

Interesting - another picture

Interesting - another picture of that elusive prototype with the big orange capacitor surfaces.

This letter was clearly written before they had production units on hand.  I wonder what Jobs was really offerring to sell for $75.

That is strange that it is $75... that is far below MSRP. Maybe this was during very hard times?  :)

I thought it said in the

I thought it said in the letter that it was $75 for a bare board.  I'll have to re-read it.  That would probably have not been too far off from normal.  A fully assembled (as far as they were) board was $666.66, and back in those days the chips were a bigger portion of the price than today probably, plus there would be a fair amount of labor solding in all the sockets and discrete components and then installing all the chips, testing, etc.

It's not completely obvious

It's not completely obvious from the context what exactly "board" includes

It mentions the number of

It mentions the number of chips and the 16k of RAM, so it seems like it's talking about populated boards.  I've never heard of Apple selling unpopulated boards, but this was early days, maybe he was trying to get rid of some samples to a friend or something, or just needed weekend beer money.

Apple-1 auction

I was the highest bidder for the Apple-1 but there was a reserve. The owner can contact me anytime.

For the owner: I have screenshots to proof, it was me.

Btw: Anyone interested in selling an Apple-1 may contact me. I am interested and know others interested as well.

Send me a pm or go to the Apple-1 Registry and click on contact.

Note: I bought the Apple-1 and Lisa 1 one hour after auction.

Thank you Jimmy. Definitely I will try to find a place to display the Apple-1. Two Apple-1 I lent to museums (for free). 5 are now in my collection.

Well, I look forward to you

Well, I look forward to you posting some “family” photos of the three that are not on public display yet. Or you could take them out on social occasions to impress your friends as Glenn Dellimore did with his two Apple-1s last night: https://www.instagram.com/p/BrB7Qhahdif/

Well, next year I could make a picture of 3 of 5. Probably in 2019 at least one more Apple-1 will join my collection, so maybe 4 of 6 or even better.

Glen is a funny and friendly guy. But I will not handle the Apples the way Glenn did. Glenn wrote to me about some pictures I could use for the Apple-1 Registry but so far, I have none. And I don't copy/paste pictures without written permission.

Some owner offered to send me pictures but many owners are very busy or live far away from the bank deposit box.

And I've got still knowledge of some Apple-1 but the owner want to keep anything confidential and I do respect this fully. But I save all information in a hidden part of the registry to preserve the history.

Btw, thank you for sharing so many pictures and information about your Apple-1. And I like your new frame for the Apple-1.

Maybe one day there will be an exhibition and all owners are invited to join. If Apple Cuppertino would call, I guess many would come. But this is highly unlikely and luckily other options exist.
