Windows on MacBook

Hi there,

This is not a super-techie question. I need to run memoQ (a translation app), and basically macbook is the only one device available to me next week. memoQ is not compatible with MacBook, yet its voice typing works with iPod - oddly enough.

Ok, if there are any users running Windows on Mac? Are you happy with that? Or maybe there is a magic way to make an app compatible with macOS (of course I know that's highly unlikely, but maybe somebody has done some reverse-engineering etc.).

Thank you!

I am aware of the issue, I also use CAT tools, and they typically require Windows environment.

Have you head of something called winebottler ?

thank you!

Oh, thank you for your reply, Marty90. I have actually googled and found exactely the same app that you recomended. Howevever, I keep my MacOS up to date, which is not the case with winbottler. It is  not compatible with any macOS version newer than Mojave. Moreover, it has not been updated for 3 years now. I have tried several forks developed by third party developers, they processed memoQ download, but all got stuck at some point.

For example, here is PlayOnMac. It works fine for a good deal of populiar windows apps. For memoQ, it gets stuck as I it tries to extract files on and on (the step loops). So I have survived (LOL) creating Windows bootcamp and installing MemoQ into its recomended environment. I guess even if you manage to run memoQ in macOS, it is going to crash and freeze if you use such apps as PlayOnMacs.

I installed too many WinBottler alternatives like WinOnX, none managed to complete  memoQ  installtion, let alone its functioning. I got Bing redirect in Google and Safari, basically the sympthoms as liad down here. So, I am affraid trying all those raw apps is rather a way to get hacked than to hack your mac into running unsupported app (unless the app is a common one).

Personally I'm not a fan of

Personally I'm not a fan of updating Mac OS for no good reason.

There hasn't been a good reason to update since Sierra, frankly, and I'm only grudgingly updating to Mojave in order to run only one particular application that requires it.

That said, the application you need is Parallels Desktop.  Sure it's commercial software but it's ridiculously cheap for what it does - allow you to run any number of virtual machines within your MacOS environment, including multiple real iterations of Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.

Even if you only use Windows to run one particular application it's probably worth it.

Using Parallels with other flavors of Mac OS X

Baldrick: Like you, I continue to keep my 2011 Mac Mini at High Sierra and use Parallels to run Windows XP, Windows 10 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.

I have wondered if Parallels will allow us to use more recent flavors of OS X such as Mojave, Big Sur, Catalina and/or Monterey.

Have you tried any of these in Parallels?
