Apple //c Printing

Is there a way to print from my physical //c to my Windows (or Linux VM) PC via the Serial connection?

I'd love to tinker with printing from PrintShop or AppleWorks, but without the clutter of a large dot matrix printer in my office.

Any ideas? I know that there's an emulator which supports printing...

I've also tried redirecting the printer output to a text file, but it appears that my windows PC doesn't have the right ASCII codes as I get a lot of the boxes. The software I found which is supposed to convert Epson FX-80 to text (from a dos app) doesn't handle it well.

EDIT: I've gotten somewhere! Check this out!

Re: Apple //c Printing

So here is what I did...

So today I was bored and I decided I REALLY wanted to make a poster in The Print Shop... but how?

So I got to thinking. The Apple //c (amongst others) used serial printing!

First thing I did was grab a copy of RS232 Data Logger

I fired up The Print Shop, made a poster, and hit Print.

ImageWriter or Epson FX-80...

I figured that more information would exist for the 9 Pin Epsons than the ImageWriter.

Once I "printed" my card, I was left with a .txt file on my desktop PC.

Using another piece of software I found, DOSPrinter I started to experiment.

dosprinter.exe /PDF /9P File.txt

Gave me an output that looked something like this

It's not 100%, but it's certainly neat to be able to "print" from real hardware.

I also tested this method using the Epson options in AppleWorks 2.0 and it prints both Documents and Spreadsheets beautifully.

If anyone knows of a more elegant way to do this (again, from real hardware) I would love to know!

I've been looking for something just like this as an alternative to trying to buy an old Imagewriter, or Apple Dot Matrix. I'll have to give it a shot soon. Currently using my SSC for Internet via ProTerm, but have fond memories of The Print Shop!

Thanks for sharing.

If you just want to do Apple printing - not specifically from a real IIc - GSport has a great set of (real) printer options. See:

It never occurred to me to use the GS emulator in that way. AppleWin never had that kind of support. Thanks!
