Apple II disk card as a Smartport

I have an apple iie with a disk II card. I found some software for a A2PICO card, I normally use this card for z80 card emulation and it works very well.

I installed the software, but can't seem to get the Disk II card to work as an Smartcard.

Anyone managed this? If so how!

did you use A2Retronet

did you use A2Retronet firmware ?

Next if you put your pico card in slot #1 (for example), you have to boot on this card with PR#1

No, thats for using an SD Card on the a2pico card as a hard drive, I used the softSP which puts a rom image in a pretend printer interface, apparently this was a reconised way to re-use the printer card to just be a rom card? It should let you connect a smartSD external device.

Yes I did try that.

It's my understanding that

It's my understanding that the Disk ][ cannot do that, only the later Apple 5 1/4 controller card.

I'm not sure that is true, the Disk ][ Controller Card and the Apple 5.25 Controller card are almost the same circuit, differing mostly in the connector and how the drive select wiring is done because of the single DB19 connector instead of the two IDC20.  If there is an issue I would guess it is probably related to that difference and may be possible to work around with cabling.

Yeah, I think you're right.

Yeah, I think you're right.  I looked at the Fujinet's "documentation" again and it just reminds me that what I don't understabnd about the device can fill a book...

I did find a few people who

I did find a few people who said it normally only works if you put the A2pico (with SoftSP) in slot 7 and the Disk II card in 6. So I tried that but it just 'gets stuck' on the APPLE II at the top of the screen. If you break out of it and try #pr7 it just says no device connected.
