Hi guys,
My second drive on the Apple II+ is not working properly. Intermittently makes loud noises using ADTPro and does not show as a drive to select when receiving disk images (i.e. copying to it).
I ran some tests using "Apple II Confidence Program"
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/ftp.apple.asimov.net/images/disk_utils/diagnostics/Apple%20II%20Plus%20Diagnostic%20Confidence%20Disk.dsk
And here are the results:
APPLE ][ CONFIDENCE PROGRAM VERSION 0.1
SEEK/READ/WRITE/ALIGN TEST
=========================
DISK SLOT/DRIVE: 6/1 6/2
ONLINE [*] [*]
TEST DISKETTE [*] [ ]
SEEK [*] [*]
READ [*] [*]
WRITE [*] [ ]
ALIGN [*] [ ]
=========================
As you can see, DISK 2 failed on TEST, WRITE and ALIGN.
Before I head down the path of a full cleaning (thanks to SpeedyG's technical guide)
http://www.appleii-box.de/H084_1_AppleIIDiskService1.htm
Should I try something else first?
Just wondering what you guys think,
Thanks,
David
Hello David,
thanks for update.... this helps keeping correct links in the threads for future...
please also recognize my notes about the problems related to disktrack-alignment if
disks from asimov are used - and not original disks.....
I´d first start with cleaning read/write head and cleaning and lubbing the diskpositioning
disk and speedalignment. Then if there is a problem of reading disks written from adjusted other drive
- next step might be needed to check trackalignment
- and finaly if needed to check the read write compensation.

Ok SpeedyG, corrected the link above to the new location.
Thanks for the information, it will take me some time to review and build up enough courage to "pop open" this soda can to do the maintenance. Probably has never been done on this drive before.
I will report back on progress....
What do you mean about asimov disk images? Are you suggesting they are not good for Apple II drives? Just not clear what you mean. What "notes" are you referring to? Thanks.
Hello David,
if you view this page:

and scroll down till you see the Datalife disk and start reading
the two paragraphs leading before the picture you will recognize
what i mention...
