Some trouble with a newly acquired 6500

Yep, I finally got a hold of a PowerMac 6500. This is only the base 225MHz model but it will do. I installed a 80GB IDE drive, 2 x 64MB DIMMS, and wired up a replacement for the 4.5V pram battery.

Now I've just got to get it to recognize the Rage 128 I installed. It's from a blue & white I'm pretty sure (it has the pins for the DVD decoder card). It shows a generic "display card" in system profiler but doesn't do anything else. Anybody have any info on this.

What I'm really posting about is the ethernet card. I'm unable to get a hold of the drivers for the Farallon card I installed. I believe it's simply known as their fast ethernet (10/100) one. Does anybody know of a reliable source? I've found lots of dead links but nothing else.

Can't help other than to say that in my 6500, System Profiler identifies my Rage 128 card as ATY,Rage 128v.
It's running MacOS 9.1

I only own "Farallon Ethermac ENI 2.3" - though I don't know if this is the last version published but I think so. I am not sure wether this is the full driver package for all Farallon interfaces of that time but I remember using that one with a Farallon PCI card. And furthermore I remember this card and software not being recognized beyond Mac OS 7.6.1 or at least causing lots of troubles in my TAM.

Who makes the chipset on the ethernet card (eg, Realtek, D-Link)? You might be able to find a generic non-Farallon driver that will work.

For the Rage 128 card...which OS have you installed? OS 9 should recognize it, 8.6 may be hit and miss depending on what mac the install disc is from, and before that I suspect you'd be out of luck.
There are separate ATI drivers available for "modern" cards (from the standpoint of an even older OS, at least) but IIRC the Rage-supporting ones I have still require a minimum of OS 9.

I finally found my Apple-branded 10/100 from a G3 to use. I was starting to think that I never actually got that other card from a Mac, in fact. It used a Digital chipset.

Did any of ATI's "newer" drivers ever recognize the Apple-OEM video cards?

Re: Some trouble with a newly acquired 6500

Sorry for the long delay, been busy.

I've since acquired a Radeon Mac Edition to try out but with no luck either. I even threw in a USB card I know works (I was using it in a beige G3) and it didn't even see it there (Tattletech, etc.).

So, I started taking it apart to look for any physical problems. I noticed what looked like a dark residue around the C100 capacitor (between the CPU and the pci riser slot) on the motherboard. This got me thinking that it might be a leaking capacitor that's linked to the PCI bus problems.

I'm probably going to go ahead and try to replace it. Does anybody know a good source for these type of capacitors?

You might want to send a PM to Trag here or at the 68KMLA. He sells re-capping kits and probably has what you need.

I've had good experiences with Digi-Key, though at least when I ordered from them three or four years ago, they have a minimum order otherwise you pay a large handling fee.

Just ordered from DipMicro (Canada) and Futurlec (Thailand), both with good service, though I've read Futurlec can take a while to ship sometimes but I had my order within about two weeks.
