I just made a Apple Macintosh 9-pin mouse to usb converter . 

 

It's compatible with the following:

  • M0100
  • A9M0050
  • A2M2050
  • A2M4015
  • A2M2070

How does that work?  Small microcontroller in the D-shell?  Like an Arduino Tiny or something?

Yes, it uses an ATMEGA micro controller to convert the signals to USB.
