Linux and the AMD

yepp, it's me again........*DOH!*

does linux support AMD ATHLON XP+ Processors and supporting motherboards, yepp, i'm a nubie here to

ashamed to say it, all i've ever used is Windows Dos all the way Up to XP (and CE), but, thats a diff. story all together

but really folks, does it, and if it does, is it a good idea to go from MS-XP to Linux (say uh.....Linux redhat9)???

or........another interesting thought, could i put mac X panther of a separate parition on my Home grown computer affectionately named Chipmunk???

would it work? or maybe i should go w/ BEos, but, then could i use all of my windows programs with mac os X or BEos???

ne body kno??

"does linux support AMD ATHLON XP+ Processors and supporting motherboards"
Distros like RedHat and such will run on anything that Win9x/2k/XP will run on, flawlessly. There are also linux, unix and unix-like OSes that can run on anything from Amigas to Xboxes.

"is it a good idea to go from MS-XP to Linux (say uh…..Linux redhat9)???"
Well, although linux is a much, much better OS, it isn't compatible with any windows programs (a rule with a few exceptions). However, there are equivalent applications on the other side such as OpenOffice(MSOffice), The GIMP(Photoshop), XMMS (winamp), etc., most of which actually come with the OS.

It all depends on what you're using it for. If you're a big gamer, or absolutely MUST use a program that's only available for windows, Linux is NOT for you.
Keep in mind that with linux you also surrender a chunk of your ease-of-use. If you don't have a VERY good handle on the operation of operating systems, linux is NOT for you.

If you're looking to get a taste of what linux is/runs like/tastes like without getting rid of windows, try knoppix ( http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html ).

Honestly, I strongly recommend you do a good bit of reading on it before you dump windows.

All that stuff about OSX nd BeOS:

Again, Be and X CAN'T run Windows apps. They do for the most part have similar applications on their side, but this is not always the case.

If "Chipmunk" is the aforementioned AthlonXP machine, Panther will not run on it, nor will it ever run on it within this decade. And as for BeOs... I'm not even gonna go there.

In closing, I strongly recommend staying with windows until you know good and certain what you're dealing with here.

I can't believe some people

Some people (my piano teacher=mac freak) still don't know that OS X has to run on MAC hardware and he can't just do a fresh install of Winblows on his Quicksilver!
