8100 "PowerMac" Hack

Hi,

Recently, I have been using up my spare time to sand down my PowerMac 8100 using wet 'n' dry. Everything is smooth and the paint off the metal sides and top has come off. If you look in my picture galler, you will see the really rough design I gave it. I want to paint it all black and then use some waterslide decal paper to put a big powermac logo on the side in red. The reason its white on the design is because i realised that my printer cant print white! What i need to know is:

1) Do you like the idea?
2) What can I use to paint the metal (it needs to be a spray and available to the UK)
3) Where can I get a cd bezel in the uk? Mine snapped in half cos i stood on it when i was taking the case apart!

Any suggestions to make it look even better, feel free to comment on my hap-hazard design!

Thanks

Oliver

I see a red door...

I like it. I think you should do it, it'll look fantastic!

Black...would you consider a really deep blue? I saw a wonderful '65 Mustang yesterday, painted such a dark blue that after it passed me and was further away you'd swear it was black. You'd get a lot more depth out of something other than black.

My only other humble observation is you might find red a tough colour for the decal paper. It's tough to make an opaque red, especially over a dark colour. You could double-up the decal, so you've got two layers of red text, and that might do it, or you might have better luck with a stencil.

Any automotive or outdoor primer and paint should work on the metal, and the rest of the case for that matter. Krylon (not the Fusion paint), Rustoleum are fine - not sure what's available to you over there. Just give the metal a good scuff and primer, and the base coat should stick well.

Don't be like me...be patient and follow the paint can's directions to the letter!;) I've posted it before, but this link offers an excellent guide to case painting.

One thing you could do is pai

One thing you could do is paint the case the colour that you want the text to be. Say red. Them print out the text on your printer and cut it out of the paper. Then glue the letters to the case, just a weak glue so that they will come off easily. Then paint the case the final colour and peal off the peices of paper. Though for this to work the colour of the text needs to lighter than the main colour.

Use vinyl paint mask . . .

. . . and have a sign shop cut it for you. Cutting a mask for Garamond isn't easy . . . to put it VERY mildly!

a thought

I just thought I'd add to this that the PowerPC logo is MUCH classier than the PowerMac thing... maybe you could consider that instead if you haven't already finished this job.

Thankyou

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! I have a vinyl cutter at school that i can use and i also prefered the PowerPC logo, but I couldn't find a large version of it anywhere! We have this paint called "Plasti-Kote" which is designed for plastic, so I will use that for the plastic and Hammerite for the case. I do like the blue idea but I'm thinking glossy black. Im not a goth or anything like that, I just like shiny black! Keep them coming!
