Banned

I banned Badboy. If anybody wonders why, see here:

(The answer is rather self evident.)

Not as far as Drupal is concerned. I'll do some work on it today and see if I can't get some IP banning going.

WTF??? That's the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. Was drupal written by a bunch of pot smoking pacifist hippies? That's like buying a house in the ghetto without locks on the doors.

Sunds that way.
Im just curious as to why the AF forum isn't using PhpBB or something. I have my own forum in PhpBB, and i find it incredibly easy to implement user restrictions. Im not telling you guys how to run your website, i think it's great and you are all doing a fine job, im just curious.

A solution that would work (albeit inelegantly) is to ban the IP in a .htaccess file.

Application Level vs. OS Level

That's actually what Drupal recommends doing. The theory is that IP banning is not an application level function as far as they're concerned.

Seriously, I've had a look at the code and I've got an idea or two how to do it nicely. As soon as I've had an hour or two to sit down with Drupal and beat it severely, IP banning should become a reality within the CMS itself.

I'll write the code either tonight or tomorrow night. I haven't written code in a couple weeks, so it'll take me a little while to get into the right mentality for it.

I'll Give a rundown

BaD BoY Started posting at my house and has been causing most of the trouble at his. After learning that he has been causing the trouble, I have done everything to keep him off of my computers. He once did a reply before I banned him and sent an email to Tom Owad before I could catch him.
Right now he is set up on a restricted account (he can not touch anything except safari and Yahoo IM. I also check the history logs that He used on safari. After checking today, I have not seen that He was on AF at all this week. He prob. did it at his house. Since he knows almost nothing about Macs (he only Owns a VAIO and is not really knowledgable at that.) I don't think he knows how to clear the safari history or cache..
I have checked on him and he DID NOT create the account "PunkBoy". so don't ban an innocent victim. I will be viewing his logs this weekend as I will be working on his computer doing some file transfers and will keep you posted after I check them.
Whatever you do, PLEASE DON'T BAN MY IP ADDRESS!!! He has been using my computers. I have written to Tom Owad and hopefully we sort this out. If you need to talk to me, you can contact me at pledoux@gmail.com Or IM me at coiuspcrepair on Yahoo IM.

hmmm....

I'll have to talk to BaD BoY again. Maybe some persuasion will help (i.e. not being able to use my computers ever again! since he normally can't bring his desktop over to my house, He uses my Laptops.) or, I can threaten his little mind Wink

oop's!

Ban him!!! I took a look at the account my other computer, (he has restricted accounts on both my laptops, depending which one I want to use at the time, he gets the other one.) It IS him. He is now officially off of my computers. I will be telling him that tommorow. He will never use the computers in my house again. I will be wiping his account off of my laptops.

I am sorry everyone. I underestimated him and his access being restricted on my computers. I am so ticked off at him. He won't be happy as long as I am unhappy. The only time he will be allowed on computers around my house, is up the block at the library.

We now have IP banning. Ironically, I live in BC Canada, inhabited by a bunch of pot smoking pacifist hippies.

How To Use IP Banning

Under the "Administer" menu, choose the "Ban Admin" option (I'll probably rename it, I just threw that in when I was working on exactly how to create a Drupal module). You get a list of everyone who's been banned from Applefritter. There's a checkbox next to everyones names. If you want to unban the person, and any IP's that have been banned in relation to them, uncheck the box and choose "Save Settings".

The 'associated IP addresses' column lists any IP addresses already banned in relation to the user.

Click the users name. After about 10-15 seconds (insanely huge database queries), a list of -every- IP address they've ever accessed Applefritter from comes up. Put checkmarks next to the ones you want banned, write any notes on why the user is banned in "Moderator Notes", and choose "Save Settings".

Now when that IP address comes to any of the Drupal-controlled portions of Applefritter (Any of AF 2.0), they receive a message:

Your IP address has been blocked by this system. The address (IP Address) has been blocked. If you believe that the block on this address is in error, please contact the site administrator, owad@applefritter.com

(Moderator Note If There Is One)

I realize it's a bit extreme to block the site in its entirety, and am considering it displaying that message in place of the login box. Of course, feedback from anyone is appreciated on how they think it should work, and I've heard no solid word from Tom either way.

I know that it's awkward that it's in a different area than the regular user admin functions, but I was asked to make this as a module, so that any new Drupal upgrades won't break it and require completely redoing it. At the moment, all it needs is for a couple hooks to be inserted into other modules.

I used to be a member of a website run by a Canadian pink pacifist potsmoking hippie. Of course it was once the 24th most popular site on the web, and he's got two Porsches, and a load of money and friends... So much for being a hippie

If I posted a link to the site, it would likely be unacceptable. It's a semi-controversial cultural site...
